Sport fishing on Elba Island
Pinnacles, drop-offs and deep channels a few miles from shore, inside a marine protected area.
Seabeds that change within a few hundred metres
Elba's underwater topography is steep: along much of the coast a few hundred metres take you from ten to a hundred metres of depth. That means pinnacles, drop-offs and channels are quickly reachable even in a small boat, and that very different techniques coexist in the same stretch of water. Coastal trolling, bottom fishing on the pinnacles and drifting offshore are the three most widespread practices.
The setting, however, is not just any sea: the archipelago is a marine protected area and sport fishing is allowed only under precise rules that vary by zone, gear and season. No-take zones are closed; elsewhere catch limits, minimum sizes and reporting obligations apply. That is why, even if you have your own boat, going out with a local operator at least the first time is the sensible move.
Where to fish and when it pays
The outer pinnacles and the channels between Elba and the neighbouring islands are the classic ground for pelagic species; the inshore drop-offs, especially on the western side, fish best with light trolling. The most productive season runs from March to November, with big differences between species and technique. Dawn and dusk remain the best windows, and that is not a figure of speech: in the middle of a summer day activity falls off visibly.
