Kayaking and SUP on Elba Island
The coast seen from 30 centimetres above the water: caves, stacks and coves that do not exist from the road.
The simplest way to reach where nobody else gets
Many of Elba's finest coves have no road, no path and no mention in any beach guide: you can only reach them from the water. A kayak or a SUP board solves that with a minimal investment in technique. Paddling along the shoreline means slipping into sea caves, passing under granite arches, stopping on gravel beaches with nobody else on them and watching the seabed slide under the hull like an aquarium.
SUP takes half an hour to learn and on flat water becomes an instant stroll; a kayak asks for a minimum of paddling technique but covers far greater distances and handles wind much better. Several local operators run guided half-day trips with stops for swimming and snorkelling: it is the format that gives the most to people with no experience, because the guide picks the right stretch for that day's wind.
The stretches of coast worth paddling
The western coast, between Sant'Andrea and Chiessi, is the most spectacular: sheer white granite, glass-clear water, no road at all. The Enfola headland and the Gulf of Viticcio offer short, sheltered loops, perfect for a first outing. The Capo Calamita side, with its dark rock and mining remains at the waterline, is the most unusual. Early morning is almost always the best window: the sea is flat and the thermal has not set in yet.
