A holiday in winter too

Elba Island is the perfect destination for a year-round holiday, especially in winter. Away from the summer crowds, you can explore small villages rich in traditions, culture, and historic architecture, with narrow alleys and flower-adorned squares. The island offers unique attractions such as museums, fortresses, churches, and mines, open even in winter, taking you on a journey through centuries of history, from the Etruscans to Napoleon. Thanks to the mild year-round climate, Elba is ideal for outdoor activities such as trekking and cycling, surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes and the sea.

Street lamps on the seafront at sunset

During winter, Elba offers the great advantage of extremely affordable rates, making it accessible to all. Ferry tickets are significantly cheaper than in high season, and hotels, holiday homes, B&Bs, farmhouses, and residences on the island provide excellent deals. Many accommodations remain open all year, offering a variety of options: panoramic apartments by the sea, cozy farmhouses in nature, or hotels with full amenities. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or an authentic stay in small villages, Elba has the perfect solution for everyone. With more sunny days than rainy ones and a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere, a winter holiday on Elba will leave you with unforgettable memories of nature, history, and great food.

The secret of Elba

The island that breathes
slowly

Those who have visited Elba only in August know only half of the island. In winter something remarkable happens: the shops belong to the locals again, restaurateurs cook with care instead of in bulk, the trails can be walked in absolute silence, prices drop by 40–60% and the air — crystalline and scented with maquis — is among the purest in Italy.

Elba's winter climate is one of the mildest in the Mediterranean: January is the coldest month, with average temperatures of 9–16°C. Snow is extremely rare (once every 10–15 years, and only at altitude). Sunny days are frequent, the wind carries ocean air and the quality of the experience is far superior to high season.

❄
“Elba in winter is like opening a book that everyone leafs through in a hurry in summer: at last you have time to read every page.”
Elban saying, handed down by the locals
The best time: October–November and March–April are technically autumn and spring, but share the same low-season atmosphere with even more pleasant temperatures. If you are after true winter isolation, January–February are unbeatable for silence, prices and authenticity.

Got questions?

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Are the beaches accessible in winter too?
Yes, all of Elba's beaches are accessible all year round. The beach clubs close in September-October, but the public beaches stay open and are stunning in winter: empty, silent and with a very photogenic light. Swimming is possible even in January for lovers of cool water (14–16°C).
How many properties are open in winter?
Some properties close between October and March, especially campsites and seasonal hotels. However, in every municipality there are always hotels, B&Bs and apartments open all year. The most critical period is January-February in some remote areas (Pomonte, Fetovaia). It is best to book in advance using the “open in low season” filter on the ElbaMyLove portal.
Do the ferries run in winter too?
Yes, the ferries to Elba operate all year round. In the low season crossings are less frequent (every 1–2 hours) but you hardly ever need to book. The only exception: days of strong mistral or libeccio wind can cause cancellations; in those cases the sea is rough anyway and you depart on the following crossings.
Which restaurants are open in winter?
In every Elban municipality there are some restaurants open all year. Capoliveri is the village with the most venues active in winter; Portoferraio, the main town, always guarantees several options. Practical tip: book by phone the day before, as some keep reduced hours or close one day a week.
Does it ever snow on Elba in winter?
Very rarely. Episodes of significant snow date back many years, only at altitude on Monte Capanne. On the plains and coasts snow is practically unknown thanks to the mitigating effect of the sea. Night frosts are rare. It is a decidedly mild climate for an Italian winter destination.
