Boat trips around Elba Island
The circumnavigation, the neighbouring islands and the coves that stay invisible from land.
The only way to see the whole island in a day
Anyone who visits Elba by land alone sees perhaps half of it. The coastal perimeter alternates granite cliffs, dark iron headlands and white gravel beaches reachable only from the water, and the difference between the two experiences is stark. A day trip leaving from the main harbours covers the full circuit with swimming stops, and in a few hours it explains the island's geography better than a week of driving.
The formats differ and are not equivalent: group trips on large boats are the cheapest and usually include lunch on board; small-group RIBs get into places large boats cannot; private charter with skipper lets you set route and timings. Then there are the crossings to Pianosa and Capraia, which are days in their own right and must be booked ahead because places are limited by law.
The routes people actually take
The full circumnavigation in a day is the classic choice and takes in the most photographed stretches of the western coast. The half day on the west coast, between Sant'Andrea and Pomonte, is shorter and more intense: sheer cliffs, caves and the water above the Elviscot wreck. Trips to the smaller islands need good weather and specific permits. Sunset cruises, leaving in late afternoon, work best with families.
