The practical "Plan B" guide

When weather or the unexpected changes your plans

Already on Elba and today's plan no longer works? It's raining, too windy for a boat trip, your return ferry is cancelled, it's too hot to move. It happens. This guide gathers five recurring scenarios and, for each, real alternatives: museums that are actually open, sheltered beaches by wind direction, indoor experiences, useful numbers. No generic lists, only things that actually work.

Even on Elba Island, the weather can change or things may not go as planned. This section gives you smart suggestions based on conditions: what to do if it rains, if the sirocco wind blows, if the sea is rough or if you want to avoid the crowds.

Find the best north-facing beaches during south winds, cultural sites to visit in bad weather, and kid-friendly activities for any situation. Stay flexible and enjoy the island no matter what.

01
If it rains
Scenario 01 - Rain or persistent bad weather

When it rains on Elba, the island doesn't stop

Elba has a surprising network of museums, historic villas, indoor mining galleries, wine cellars, spas and craft shops. A rainy day becomes the chance to do the things you always skip in peak summer. Five practical areas to fill a grey day without moving too far.

Museums and culture

Four museums concentrated in Portoferraio plus others around the island. All indoor, affordable tickets, perfect for a rainy day.

  • Villa dei Mulini (Portoferraio) - Napoleon's town residence
  • Villa San Martino (5 km) - summer residence, Egyptian Hall, Demidoff Gallery
  • Pinacoteca Foresiana - paintings, furniture and items from the Foresi legacy
  • Linguella Archaeological Museum - finds from Roman shipwrecks

Indoor taste experiences

Wineries and farms with guided tour, tasting and shelter. Book the same morning.

  • Aleatico Passito DOCG wineries in Capoliveri
  • Marciana EVO Oil farms and strawberry-tree honey
  • Historic trattorias in the alleys of Capoliveri and Marciana

Shopping made in Elba

Iconic brands born on the island and craft shops: a morning that ends with a quality gift or souvenir.

  • Acqua dell'Elba - sea and Mediterranean scrub fragrances
  • Locman (Marina di Campo) - made in Italy watches
  • Ceramic workshops and jewellery with Elban minerals in Capoliveri

Wellness and spa

Several hotels on the north coast open their day-spa to outside guests with wellness path, sauna and heated pools.

  • Hotel spas in Biodola and Procchio
  • Massages with EVO oil and local products
  • Treatments with sea salt and seaweed from the Elba coast

Practical tip

If the rain is heavy concentrate your visits in a single town to reduce driving: Portoferraio offers 4 museums in 1 km, Marina di Campo has Elbabrick plus a covered seafront, Capoliveri has cellars and craft shops in its alleys.

02
If strong wind
Scenario 02 - Strong wind or rough sea

Sirocco, libeccio or mistral: the other coast is calm

Elba has 147 km of coastline exposed in every direction: there is always a sheltered side with flat sea. The rule: go to the coast opposite the one the wind is blowing from. South wind (sirocco) - go north; north wind (mistral) - go south; west wind (libeccio) - go east.

Sheltered beaches by wind direction

  • Sirocco from south-east: Biodola, Procchio, Sansone, Capo Bianco (north side of Portoferraio)
  • Mistral from north-west: Lacona, Fetovaia, Cavoli, Innamorata (south side)
  • Libeccio from south-west: Naregno, Morcone, Pareti (east side of Capoliveri)
  • Grecale from north-east: Marina di Campo, Cavoli (south-west side)

Trekking in inland woods

  • Trails on the inland side of Monte Capanne (beeches, chestnuts)
  • Holm oak and cork woods around Sant'Ilario and Poggio
  • Volterraio loops sheltered by vegetation

To avoid with rough sea

No Pianosa (ferry almost always suspended), no snorkelling or diving (zero visibility), no boat trips on the windward side. The Monte Capanne cable car closes in strong wind: check the official site before leaving.

03
If too hot
Scenario 03 - Extreme heat (July-August)

When Elba goes above 32°C: shift your schedule

From mid July to August the heat peaks during midday hours (12-16). The strategy: active at dawn and sunset, midday in a shaded beach or indoors. Not the other way around. The golden light at these hours is worth half the trip on its own.

Dawn and sunset trekking

  • Monte Capanne ascent (1019 m) with the first 10:00 cable car
  • Volterraio trail starting at 6:30, sunset from Monte Perone
  • Sant'Andrea and Capo Sant'Andrea at sunset: myrtle and juniper scrub

Shaded beaches (pines down to shore)

  • Lacona - pine wood to the sand, ideal for kids and long siesta
  • Marina di Campo - maritime pines in the central seafront stretch
  • Procchio (Spartaia side) - dense Mediterranean scrub on the cliff

Spas with outdoor pools and sunset aperitifs

Several hotels on the north coast (Biodola, Procchio, Portoferraio) open day-spas with pools to outside guests too. For sunset: aperitifs at Forte Stella in Portoferraio, west Sant'Andrea, Punta Pina above Capoliveri.

04
If ferry cancelled
Scenario 04 - Ferry cancelled due to bad weather

When the sea stops the ferries: what to do now

With strong sirocco or libeccio (over 25 knots) the Piombino-Portoferraio routes can be suspended or delayed for hours. First thing to do is call the company, don't wait for the SMS: the ports get unblocked by passengers booking the next alternative.

Company numbers - check status in real time

  • Moby Lines / Toremar: 199.30.30.40 (customer service)
  • Blu Navy: 0565.269710 - check ferry status

You're stuck on Elba

If your return is postponed one day, call your hotel/B&B to extend by one night (in low season a room is usually available). Take the chance to visit a museum you had skipped. For refund or ticket change: the online systems of Moby/Toremar are faster than the call centre.

You're stuck in Piombino

Piombino has hotels near the port (Stazione Marittima area). The port has bars and cafeterias. If the block lasts over 24h, consider switching company: in high-wind days one company may resume sailings before others depending on tonnage.

05
If low season
Scenario 05 - November / March / April

Elba in winter and low season: another island

From November to Easter Elba changes face. No crowds, lower prices, a winter light that is worth the trip. But many activities are closed: you need to know what is open and what is not before leaving.

What's open all year

  • The Napoleonic museums (Villa dei Mulini, Villa San Martino) - reduced hours
  • Aleatico wineries (visits by appointment)
  • Thermal hotels and spas in Portoferraio and the north coast
  • Trekking in the National Park (trails always free)

Winter trekking - the best conditions

The clear November and March air offers exceptional visibility: from the peaks of Monte Perone and Volterraio you can see Corsica, Argentario, the other islands of the Archipelago. Autumn festivals in Capoliveri and Marciana (chestnut festival, new wine festival). Temperatures 12-18°C ideal for hiking.

What is NOT available

  • Monte Capanne cable car: closed late October - Easter
  • Pianosa: ferry suspended off-season
  • Most restaurants, beach clubs and boat tours in tourist centres: open only at weekends or closed
