Wedding on Elba Island

A whole island to say yes

Elba Island is the ideal destination for a romantic wedding surrounded by Mediterranean beauty. With golden beaches, historic villages, breathtaking views and exclusive venues, saying "I do" on Elba is unforgettable.

Here you’ll find practical info and helpful tips to plan your wedding: from civil ceremonies to symbolic unions, from town hall contacts to reception venues, photographers, catering and guest accommodations.

If you dream of a memorable wedding by the sea or in the Tuscan hills, Elba is your perfect location.

01
Why here
Scenario 01 - The right reasons

Three good reasons to choose Elba

Not marketing claims, real facts. Three assets that together make Elba a truly competitive wedding destination.

Long season, reliable climate

From May to mid October the island's climate allows outdoor ceremonies with a very high safety margin. September is the top month: still warm, ideal sea temperature, island already cleared of peak-season crowds.

Multiple sceneries, few km apart

18th-century seafront forts, sandy beaches, medieval villages, imperial villas, DOC vineyards, Romanesque churches. A 30-minute drive completely changes the day's setting: ceremony in one scene, reception in another.

Easy to reach for guests

Piombino-Portoferraio ferry in one hour (Moby, Toremar, Blu Navy). Marina di Campo airport with seasonal flights from Pisa and Milan. Guests from across Italy and Europe arrive without intercontinental flights.

02
Ceremony
Scenario 02 - Civil, symbolic or religious

Three ceremony forms, three sets of rules

Choosing the ceremony type drives almost everything else: required paperwork, allowed venues, timelines. Let's go through them.

Civil ceremony

Performed by a Civil Registrar (the Mayor or their delegate). Full legal value.

  • Held in the Council Halls of the 7 island towns
  • Can also take place in non-institutional venues subject to Council approval (e.g. Forte Stella, Villa delle Grotte)
  • If celebrated outside the spouses' town of residence, a written delegation is required
Full legal value

Symbolic ceremony

Tailor-made ritual led by a non-institutional officiant (wedding planner, friend, secular celebrant). No legal value: spouses are already legally married, or will be afterwards.

  • Total venue freedom: beaches, vineyards, gardens, sunset on a boat
  • Fully personalised rite (readings, music, vows)
  • No paperwork or timing constraints
No legal value

Religious ceremony

The "concordatario" marriage (Catholic rite) has civil value in Italy. Held in the island's parish churches.

  • Churches in Portoferraio, Capoliveri, Marciana, Rio, Porto Azzurro and other villages
  • Baptism and confirmation certificates, pre-marriage course required
  • Contact the parish priest well in advance (at least 6 months)
Legal value (concordat)

Venues
Scenario 03 - Verified settings

Six recognisable and memorable settings

These are the most requested and established venues for civil and symbolic weddings on Elba. For each one we point to location and distinctive trait. For dates and fees, contact the Council or venue manager directly.

Panoramic fort

Forte Stella

Medici fortress from 1548, built on the hill above Portoferraio. 180° view of the gulf, twin forts (Forte Falcone, Torre del Martello) and the bay. One of the most requested civil venues on the island.

Portoferraio, upper town
Archaeological site

Villa Romana delle Grotte

1st-century BC Roman archaeological site on the headland closing Portoferraio gulf. Remains of a patrician domus on the cliff, ancient olive trees, view towards Capo di Bagnaia. Symbolic/civil ceremony by authorization.

Portoferraio, Le Grotte
Historic fortress

Forte Inglese

Built by the English in the 1700s, one of the four large fortifications of Portoferraio. Stone courtyards, seafront terraces, view of the harbour and arsenal. Historical atmosphere for civil ceremonies and receptions.

Portoferraio
Hillside hermitage

Eremo di Santa Caterina

Religious complex on the hill above Rio nell'Elba, immersed in the eastern slope's woods. View over the Bagnaia gulf and Cavo. For those seeking an intimate atmosphere away from tourist centres.

Rio nell'Elba
Authorised beach

Authorised beaches

Some Councils allow ceremonies on free beaches with prior authorization (respect for public access, time windows, light setup). Among the most requested: Cavoli, Innamorata, Sansone, Capo Bianco. To be agreed with the competent Council.

Council authorisation
Council hall

Council Halls of the 7 towns

The "simple civil" option: Portoferraio, Capoliveri, Porto Azzurro, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Campo nell'Elba, Rio. Each town has its own wedding hall, usually overlooking the main street or village square.

Paperwork
Scenario 04 - Documents and timing

What you really need, by the spouse's citizenship

Procedures vary based on the spouses' citizenship. What follows is the framework: for updated details check with the chosen Council and, if you are a foreign citizen, with your Consulate in Italy.

Italian citizens

  • Banns request at the Council of residence (of one of the two spouses)
  • Mandatory posting for at least 8 consecutive days
  • Stamp duty and administrative fees
  • If celebrated outside the home Council: written delegation from the home Council to the celebrating Council

EU citizens

  • Multilingual birth certificate extract (Vienna Convention)
  • Marriage clearance issued by the home country authorities
  • Valid identification document

Non-EU citizens

  • Marriage clearance legalised or with Apostille (Hague Convention)
  • Sworn translation into Italian
  • Valid passport, valid visa if applicable

Realistic timelines

Start the procedure at least 3-4 months ahead of the desired date. For non-EU citizens better 6 months: legalizations and translations take time. The wedding date is only locked after confirming availability with the hosting Council.

05
Services
Scenario 05 - Everything on the island

The services available on Elba

Six main categories. Most professionals work across the island and have over a decade of experience in island wedding planning.

Wedding planners

They coordinate the entire wedding: venue, vendors, guest logistics, the day's timeline. Essential for couples who don't live on Elba.

Photography and video

Destination wedding photographers, used to sea light and Tyrrhenian sunsets. Drone, cinematic video, printed albums.

Floral design

Bouquets, ceremony setups, reception centrepieces. With seasonal flowers and local elements (myrtle, broom, olive, juniper) for consistency with the landscape.

Catering and cuisine

Seafood catering, Elban land cuisine, full banqueting. Local wines (Aleatico Passito DOCG, Elba DOC) and territorial products.

Music and entertainment

String quartets for the ceremony, live bands for the reception, evening DJ sets. Kids entertainment and baby parking too.

Transport and logistics

Vintage cars, mini-vans for guests between venue and hotels, boats for ceremonies and sunset shoots, traditional gozzi for beach arrivals.

Calendar
Scenario 06 - Month by month

When to marry on Elba and when not

The calendar below is based on the experience of those working Elba weddings for years. Considers climate, island crowds, service availability and atmosphere.

April-May
Good choice
Mild climate, spectacular spring blooms, quiet island. May is ideal for outdoor ceremonies, with some rain risk in April. All services open from the Easter weekend.
June-mid July
Excellent choice
Peak season but not yet overcrowded, sea already warm, very long days, late sunsets (after 9pm). The classic moment of Tyrrhenian destination wedding.
September
Top month
The number-one recommendation: warm like July, best sea temperature of the year, island already cleared of peak season, more reasonable prices. Sunset shots here are unmatched.
August
Not recommended
Tourism peak: traffic, full ferries, restaurants and venues hard to book, maximum prices. Plus heatwaves with peaks over 32°C in the afternoons.
October
Romantic light
Still mild (20-24°C in the first two weeks), autumn atmosphere, harvest in progress. Outdoor ceremonies possible with some weather risk. Services already reducing from the third week.
Nov-March
Low season
Possible only for civil ceremonies in council halls or indoor venues. Many services closed, Capanne cable car closed, Pianosa unreachable. Romantic but with few operational options.
07
Guests
Scenario 07 - The guests' experience

Your guests arrive on holiday

A wedding on Elba is almost always a long weekend for guests. It is worth taking care of their experience right from arrival at the port.

How they arrive

  • Piombino-Portoferraio ferry (1 hour): Moby, Toremar, Blu Navy
  • Marina di Campo airport: seasonal flights from Pisa and Milan Linate
  • Piombino reachable by car via A12/SS1 from Rome, Florence, Genoa

Where to host them

Concentrate them on the same side of the island as the ceremony to reduce travel. Hotels in Biodola, Procchio, Marina di Campo (centre-north side), Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro (east side), Marciana Marina and Sant'Andrea (west side). Vacation homes and farm stays for family groups.

What to do before/after (3-4 extra days)

Aleatico wineries in Capoliveri, excursion to Monte Capanne by cable car (1019 m), boat trip to Pianosa, southern beaches (Cavoli, Fetovaia), historic villages (Marciana, Capoliveri). More detailed suggestions in the recommended itineraries.
