Sailing and charter on Elba Island
From here the Tuscan Archipelago is a short passage: seven islands within a beat.
An island that is above all a base to sail from
Elba is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and its position makes it the natural base for sailing the other six. Capraia is a few hours upwind, Pianosa lies straight ahead, Montecristo closes the southern horizon. With four equipped harbours and dozens of safe anchorages around the perimeter, you can build a week's itinerary without repeating a single stop.
There are essentially three formats: bareboat charter for those with a licence and experience, skippered charter for those who want to sail without command responsibility, and day trips on a shared sailing boat for anyone who simply wants to try. The last two require no qualification at all: you step aboard and that is it. Many crews are happy to let you take the helm and handle sheets during the passage.
Harbours, anchorages and classic routes
Portoferraio is the main and most sheltered harbour, with its Medicean dock beneath the fortresses. Marciana Marina is the smallest and the nicest to live on foot. Porto Azzurro faces east and suits arrivals from the mainland. The southern anchorages of Golfo Stella and Lacona are the classic summer night stop. The best time to sail is May-June and September: steadier wind, free berths, lower rates.
