Elba's network of trails
Elba has over 400 km of waymarked trails climbing from the sea to the 1019 metres of Monte Capanne. Its backbone is the Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE), crossing the island along the ridge through Mediterranean scrub, chestnut woods and views over the Archipelago. Trails for every level, from coastal walks to high-altitude climbs.
The island's best trails
A
Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE)
From Cavo to Pomonte / Patresi
The island's spine: roughly 50-60 km along the ridge, hiking grade, best done over 3-4 stages. Constant views of sea and mountains.
B
Monte Capanne
Marciana
Elba's highest peak (1019 m). Climb on foot from Marciana or take the cable car; on clear days the view stretches across the whole Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica.
C
Volterraio Fortress
Rio / Portoferraio
A fortress of Pisan origin perched above the gulf of Portoferraio. A short, scenic trail among the most striking on the island, with 360-degree views.
D
Sanctuary of Madonna del Monte
Marciana
A hermitage set in the woods above Marciana, along ancient paved paths. A historic spring, beech wood and silence: one of Elba's best-loved walks.
E
Capo d'Enfola Loop
Portoferraio
A scenic headland with a loop trail around the former tuna fishery. Easy and family-friendly, with spectacular glimpses of the north coast.
F
Calamita Mine Trails
Capoliveri
Old mining tracks on Monte Calamita, among tunnels, terraces and views over the southern coast. Unique geology and scenery.
Elba is a natural gym for mountain biking: technical single tracks, scenic gravel roads and demanding climbs all over the island. Its beating heart is Monte Calamita, but cycling trail networks also cover Monte Capanne, Volterraio and the eastern coast. Local bike centres offer MTB and e-bike rental, guides and tours for every level.
The Capoliveri Bike Park on Monte Calamita has over 100 km of tracks and 5 permanent routes: Calamita (green), Miniere (red), Ripa Est (yellow), World Cup (black) and Legend Cup (blue), plus downhill enduro tracks.
Costa dei Gabbiani Bike Center
Capoliveri
Since 2015, guided excursions across Elba with MTB and e-bikes, courses with professional riders and a second base (BikElba) in Spartaia bay at Procchio.
Bike centre in Naregno (Capoliveri): MTB and e-bike rental, guided enduro and XC excursions, lessons, bike transfer and technical support on Monte Calamita.
Elba's western side, dominated by the granite batholith of Monte Capanne, offers walls, boulders and crags for climbing and bouldering. Solid, well-featured rock with sea views: a niche but captivating destination, to be enjoyed away from the crowds.
Climbing on Elba is mostly on granite around Marciana and Pomonte. There are no equipped via ferratas: for the less frequented sectors it is advisable to rely on a local mountain guide and bring your own gear.
Discovering Elba on horseback means following ancient paths between scrub and sea, at the slow pace of trail riding. The riding centres around Capoliveri and the Costa dei Gabbiani offer lessons for all levels, rides on Monte Calamita and multi-day outings, from half-day trips to a full tour of the island.
ASD La Bosana
Capoliveri
Riding centre in the Ripalte - Costa dei Gabbiani area: lessons for all levels, rides on Monte Calamita and trail rides from half a day up to a full tour of the island.
The mild year-round climate and dense trail network make Elba ideal for nordic walking and trail running. From gentle coastal walks to the demanding ascents of the GTE and Monte Capanne, the island offers workouts for every level and hosts trail races and gatherings each spring and autumn.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal: mild temperatures, blossom and beautiful light. In summer the trails are best walked early in the morning, while Elba's mild winter allows walking even in the cooler months.
Can the GTE be done in a single day?
No: the Grande Traversata Elbana is about 50-60 km and is best done over 3-4 stages. However, you can tackle single sections in a day, such as the climb from Poggio up to Monte Capanne.
Do I need a guide for the Capoliveri Bike Park?
The routes are waymarked and freely accessible, but for the enduro and black tracks, for MTB and e-bike rental and for the bike shuttle it is worth turning to local bike centres, which provide guides and technical support.
Can you go climbing on the Island of Elba?
Yes, mostly on granite around Monte Capanne, between Marciana and Pomonte. It is a niche destination: there are no equipped via ferratas, so for the more demanding sectors a local mountain guide is recommended.
Where can you go horse riding?
Around Capoliveri and the Costa dei Gabbiani (Ripalte) there are riding centres with outings for all levels, from lessons in the arena to rides on Monte Calamita and multi-day trail rides.
