Frequently asked questions

FAQ - All the answers
to get around Elba

Is it better to bring my car on the ferry or rent one on the island?
It depends on the length of your stay and number of travellers. For stays longer than 7-10 days or large families with lots of luggage, bringing your own car is often more convenient. For short stays in high season, renting on the island can save on the ferry ticket and offer more flexibility.
How long is the crossing from Piombino?
The Piombino-Portoferraio crossing takes about 60 minutes. Routes to Rio Marina take about 45 minutes and those to Cavo about 30 minutes. Schedules may vary slightly depending on weather/sea conditions and the type of ferry used.
Do ferries operate all year round?
Yes. Moby Lines and Toremar guarantee connections all year round with reduced frequency in low season. Blu Navy operates mainly in high and mid season. Always check availability on the company websites before your trip.
Can you get around the island only with public transport?
Yes, with some limits. Autolinee Toscane covers the main centres of the island with direct lines from Portoferraio. In high season runs are frequent, in low season less so. Some secluded beaches and small villages are not directly reachable by bus: for those areas you need a car, scooter or bike.
Does Marina di Campo airport operate all year round?
The airport is operational but flights are mainly seasonal. Active routes vary from year to year and are concentrated in the tourist season. To plan a flight, check directly with the airlines operating the airport or on the airport website.
Are special permits needed to drive in historic centres?
In some villages (Capoliveri, Marciana, parts of Portoferraio) restricted traffic or pedestrian zones are in force, especially in high season. Parking is mainly outside historic centres: it's better to leave your vehicle in a permitted area and continue on foot. Check the local signs.
