Getting around the island
The right vehicle for every corner of Elba
Elba Island is best explored on wheels. Renting a car or scooter gives you the freedom to reach every hidden gem – from Portoferraio to Capoliveri, from Procchio to Rio Marina. On ElbaMyLove, you’ll find carefully selected car, scooter, and motorbike rentals, with pickup options at all major ports and tourist resorts. Compare rates, choose the perfect vehicle, and experience the island your way.
There are three options: a car for comfort and families, a scooter for agility and easy parking, bikes and e-bikes for sport and nature. Rental points are concentrated at Portoferraio port, Marina di Campo airport and the main tourist towns.
What to rent
Car, scooter or bike?
Each vehicle has its strengths: choose based on how many you are, where you stay and the kind of holiday you want.
Car
The most comfortable choice for families and groups: room for luggage, air conditioning in summer and the ability to reach any beach in any weather. Small cars, citycars and the odd convertible are available.
Families and long distances
Scooter
Agile and cheap, perfect for the coastal roads and for parking anywhere. The 125 cc is the most common and handles climbs and bends well. Helmet always included in the rental.
Couples and quick trips
Bikes & E-bikes
From mountain bikes to e-MTBs: Elba is a much-loved destination for cyclists, with over 200 km of trails (especially around Capoliveri). The e-bike helps on climbs and in the summer heat.
Rentals are concentrated at the arrival points and main tourist towns: Portoferraio port (cars and scooters a few metres from the ferry), Marina di Campo airport (often with free transfer), Porto Azzurro on the east coast and Capoliveri for bikes and e-MTBs. Below you'll find a selection of island operators.

Practical guide
What to know before you rent
Licence and age
A car requires a category B licence (often minimum age 21 with a credit card in your name). For a scooter: 50 cc with an AM licence from age 14, 125 cc with an A1 or B licence. Always bring ID and a credit card.
Book in advance
In high season (July and August) vehicles run out fast. Book online a few weeks ahead for the best choice and rates.
Ferry with your vehicle or rent?
Weigh the cost of taking your car on the ferry against renting on the island. For short stays or in peak season, arriving without a car and renting locally is often the better choice.
Restricted zones and old towns
The historic centres of Capoliveri, Marciana and part of Portoferraio have narrow streets and restricted-traffic zones: scooters and bikes are often more practical than a car.
Insurance and deposit
Almost all operators require a security deposit on a credit card. Check the excess and coverage (collision damage) and inspect the vehicle together with the operator at pick-up.
E-bikes and trails
The e-MTB is ideal for tackling climbs and heat. Capoliveri offers a real bike park; always respect the trails and the rules of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
Note: make sure the helmet is included with the scooter rental and respect the restricted-traffic zones in the old towns (fines also reach rental customers). Check pick-up/drop-off times, especially on ferry arrival and departure days.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ on renting on Elba
Do I really need a vehicle on Elba Island?
It depends. To tour the island, change beach every day and reach the more distant coves, a vehicle is very useful. If you stay in a well-served town and move around little, you can manage with buses and taxi-boats.
Is it better to bring my car on the ferry or rent on the island?
Compare the cost of the car crossing (which is significant in high season) with renting locally. For a few days or in peak summer, arriving on foot and renting on the island is often the most convenient and economical choice.
What licence do I need for a scooter?
A 50 cc only needs an AM licence (from age 14); a 125 cc requires an A1 or a B licence. A car requires a B licence. Always bring ID and a credit card for the deposit.
Where do I rent as soon as I arrive by ferry?
At Portoferraio port there are several rentals just metres from the quay. If you arrive by plane at Marina di Campo airport, many operators offer free transfer to the pick-up point.
E-bike: where to rent one and why?
Capoliveri is the reference point for MTBs and e-bikes, with a bike park and over 200 km of trails, but you'll also find rentals in Portoferraio, Lacona and Marina di Campo. The e-bike makes climbs and routes accessible even if you're not fit.
