Why divers who have seen the rest of the Mediterranean come here
Elba is not an island with a few dive sites: it is an island made of dive sites. The coast alternates granite, serpentine and iron, and underwater that geological variety becomes variety of landscape: boulder slides stepping down into the depths, isolated pinnacles rising out of the blue, vertical walls covered in gorgonians and sponges. All of it lies within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the largest marine protected area in Europe, and the protection shows: shoals of damselfish, groupers that do not flee, lobsters tucked under rock ledges.
The single biggest draw remains the Elviscot wreck, the cargo ship that went down on 10 January 1972 on the Ogliera rocks off Pomonte. She lies between 8 and 12 metres, broken in two and beautifully lit by the sun: one of the very few Mediterranean wrecks that can also be visited while snorkelling, and for a beginner diver she is often the first shipwreck of a lifetime. More experienced divers find plenty to work with on the outer pinnacles, where current brings in the bigger fish.
Do you need certification? For scuba, yes, but almost every dive centre on the island runs try-dives in shallow, sheltered water under an instructor's direct supervision: one day and a basic medical certificate are enough.
Where and when
The dive sites worth asking for
Which site you dive depends on the day's wind, and that is the real advantage of an island: when the mistral shuts down the north coast, the south coast is a lake. A good dive centre changes plan the same morning. The season runs from April to November, with the warmest water between late July and September and the best visibility, paradoxically, in the shoulder months, when the sea is quieter and there is less plankton.
Elviscot wreck
Pomonte, 8-12 m. A 1972 cargo ship on the Ogliera rocks. Easy, bright, suitable for beginners too.
Scoglietto di Portoferraio
Islet north of the gulf: walls, boulder slides and fish used to divers. Progressive depths down to 40 m.
Western pinnacles and headlands
From Sant'Andrea to Punta Nera: white granite, canyons, gorgonians. More technical dives, often exposed to current.
The National Park's no-take zones have specific access rules that can change from year to year: the dive centre you go out with knows them and takes you where diving is allowed.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we get most often
When is the best time to dive on Elba?
From April to November. The warmest water is between late July and September (23-25°C at the surface), but many divers prefer May-June and September-October: fewer people on the sites, often better visibility and dive centres more willing to tailor the outing.
Can I see the Elviscot wreck without certification?
Yes. The hull lies between 8 and 12 metres, only a few dozen metres from the shore at Pomonte, and on calm days it is visible and photographable while snorkelling with mask and fins. Descending to the bottom and swimming through the structure does require certification and a guide.
Do I need to bring my own equipment?
No. Every dive centre on the island rents full equipment, wetsuit included. It is worth bringing only your own mask and dive computer if you have them: those are the items that most change the quality of a dive.
