The island's whites

White wines: mineral and saline

Elba whites reflect the sea: saline, mineral, with freshness recalling iodine and rocky air. Ansonica is the main grape, capable of producing wines of great personality and longevity.

DOC

Ansonica of Elba

Ansonica (Inzolia) minimum 85%

Ansonica (or Inzolia) is the identity white grape of Elba, probably of Sicilian origin but acclimatised on the island for centuries. Vinified pure for at least 85% as per regulation, it best expresses the marine minerality of Elba's soils.

Golden straw colour. Intense aromas of acacia flowers, broom, sweet almond and iodine. On the palate it is structured, savoury, with a long finish recalling the salty rock air.

Pairing: Cacciucco, fish soups, raw seafood, stuffed squid.
DOC

Elba Bianco

Trebbiano toscano (Procanico) 10–70%, Ansonica and/or Vermentino 10–70%

The island's "everyday" white, a traditional blend codified by the DOC regulation of 1967. Trebbiano toscano (locally called Procanico) forms the backbone, completed by Ansonica and Vermentino in proportions decided by the producer.

Light straw colour. Fresh aromas of white-fleshed fruit, wildflowers and a slight citrus note. On the palate it is dry, balanced and easy-drinking. The all-meal white of Elba.

Pairing: Light seafood appetisers, fried fish, pasta with delicate sauces.
DOC

Vermentino of Elba

Vermentino 85% minimum

A typical grape of the entire Tyrrhenian coast (Liguria, Sardinia, coastal Tuscany) that on Elba finds a distinctive mineral and marine expression. Vinified pure for a minimum of 85% in the DOC regulation.

Bright straw colour with greenish reflections. Aromatic nose of white flowers, lime, white peach and a pleasant slightly bitter finish. On the palate it is fresh, savoury, with the characteristic marine salinity that distinguishes it from other regional versions.

Pairing: Shellfish, clams, lemon linguine, seafood salads.
Tyrrhenian reds

Red wines: iron minerality

Elba reds are less known than whites and Aleatico, but offer remarkable surprises. Local Sangiovese has a unique iron-like minerality from the hematite-rich soils of the island's eastern side.

DOC

Elba Rosso

Sangiovese 60% minimum + other red varieties

The DOC red of Elba is based on Sangiovese (locally Sangioveto) for at least 60%, completed by other authorised black grape varieties. The ferrous soils of the eastern side, rich in hematite, give Elba Sangiovese a peculiar iron-like minerality that distinguishes it from mainland Tuscan Sangioveses.

Ruby colour with garnet reflections. Aromas of sour cherry, ripe plum, violet and spicy notes. On the palate it is structured, with good tannins and marked persistence. There is also a Riserva typology with ageing of at least 24 months.

Pairing: Wild boar stew, roast lamb, aged cheeses, braised meats.
The summer pink

Rosé wine: gastronomic cerasuolo

The Elba rosé is the island's summer wine: gastronomic, fresh, with Sangiovese structure and Aleatico floral aromas. Cerasuolo with salmon reflections, perfect for grilled fish.

DOC

Elba Rosato

Sangiovese 60% minimum, possibly other black grapes

Elba rosé is the island's summer wine: obtained mainly from Sangiovese grapes vinified with brief skin contact, sometimes enriched with small portions of Aleatico for aromas.

Cerasuolo pink colour with salmon reflections. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate and a hint of wild rose. Fresh, gastronomic, well-structured. The perfect companion to grilled fish and summer salads.

Pairing: Grilled fish, summer salads, local cured meats, margherita pizza.
Elban bubbles

Sparkling DOC: the island Charmat

A growing niche production: Elba Bianco Spumante DOC is made with the Charmat method from Ansonica and Vermentino grapes. Fine perlage, marine savouriness, ideal as an aperitif at sunset.

DOC

Elba Spumante

Ansonica and/or Vermentino, Charmat method

The sparkling typology of Elba DOC (formally "Elba Bianco Spumante") is produced mainly from Ansonica and Vermentino grapes using the Charmat method (tank refermentation). A niche but growing production, valued by the freshness of the island varieties.

Bright straw colour with fine, persistent perlage. Aromas of acacia flowers, citrus, green apple and bread crust. On the palate it is fresh, savoury, with an elegant bubble. Ideal as an aperitif at sunset on the island.

Pairing: Aperitif, raw fish, light fried dishes, fresh cheeses.

The Elba harvest is one of the most awaited events of the year. Each grape variety has its moment: whites are picked late August–September, reds September–October, Aleatico for passito is left in the field until full over-ripening.

Pairing guide

Elba wines naturally pair with the island's cuisine. The main rule: fresh Tyrrhenian fish calls for mineral whites, meat and game call for structured reds, Aleatico Passito is enjoyed alone or with traditional desserts.

Centuries of vine and wine

The wine history of Elba

Over 2000 years of winemaking history, from the Etruscans to modern DOC and DOCG denominations.

  1. 600 BC
The Etruscans plant the first vineyards
Elba's first vineyards are planted by the Etruscans, already present on the island for the iron mines. Etruscan wine amphorae have been found in the Gulf of Portoferraio. Wine serves as exchange goods with the Greek colonies of the Mediterranean.
  2. 150 BC
    Elba wine at Roman banquets
The Greek geographer Strabo cites Elba as "an island rich in vines". Elba wines reach Roman banquets; amphorae bearing the mark "Ilva" (Roman name of the island) have been found throughout central Italy.
  3. 1814
    Napoleon discovers Aleatico
During his Elba exile (May 1814–February 1815), Napoleon Bonaparte becomes passionate about Aleatico. It is said he personally cared for its expansion: during his stay Elba viticulture experiences documented growth. The "Emperor's Privilege" remains, considered a kind of DOC ante litteram.
  4. 1967
    The Elba DOC is born
By Presidential Decree of 9 July 1967 (Official Gazette 200 of 10.08.1967), the Elba DOC is recognised, one of Italy's first controlled origin denominations. The regulation protects native grape varieties (Ansonica, Aleatico) and sets production rules for the entire island.
  5. 2011
    Aleatico Passito earns DOCG status
By ministerial decree of 17 May 2011 (Official Gazette 131 of 08.06.2011), Elba Aleatico Passito is promoted to DOCG — Italy's highest wine classification. A recognition that definitively sanctions the excellence of this passito among the great Italian dessert wines.
  6. Today
    Elba's winemaking renaissance
A new generation of Elban winemakers is rediscovering nearly forgotten grape varieties and experimenting with contemporary winemaking techniques (Pet-Nat, orange wine, extended macerations) while respecting territorial identity. Elba returns to being a Tyrrhenian winemaking laboratory.
