Boat trips
Boat trips reveal the coast from a unique viewpoint: hidden coves, caves and the wildest stretches such as Fetovaia, Sant'Andrea and Pomonte. Many operators run island tours, sunset cruises and trips with a swimming stop.
Sport fishing and fishing tourism offer an authentic bond with Elba's sea: boat outings with local fishermen to discover traditional techniques, routes and flavours.
Within the National Park fishing is regulated and forbidden in some zones: always check the current rules and rely on authorised operators.
On the large sandy beaches, from Marina di Campo to Lacona, Naregno and Procchio, beach clubs rent umbrellas and sunbeds by the day or by the week, with showers, changing cabins, a bar and often a restaurant on the sea. Stretches of free beach remain alongside, so you can alternate.
In July and August the front rows are booked a few days ahead with a phone call to the beach club; in June and September you can usually find a spot even turning up in the morning.
Molo Beach
Rio
Beach club on the Cavo seafront with sea-view restaurant and tiki bar open from breakfast until late, accessible beach and water sports.
With a simple mask you discover another world: Elba's rocky coves offer shallow, clear waters, Posidonia meadows, octopuses, sea bream and starfish. Among the best spots for snorkelling are Sant'Andrea, Capo Bianco, Sansone, Enfola and the bay of Pomonte around the Elviscot wreck.
The best coves for snorkelling
A
Spiaggia di Sansone
Portoferraio · North
White pebbles and clear water, with two side rocks full of life: among the island's finest, great for children too.
B
Capo Bianco
Portoferraio · North
Next to Sansone, very white pebbles and a bright seabed that boosts visibility, within the marine reserve.
C
Sant'Andrea
Marciana · West
Famous for its clarity and natural granite pools: shallow, fish-rich waters, ideal for beginners.
D
Pomonte
Marciana · West
Snorkelling over the famous Elviscot wreck at just 2-12 m, among Posidonia meadows and schools of fish.
E
Le Ghiaie
Portoferraio · North
A short walk from Portoferraio centre, in a marine reserve: clear water and plenty of fish a few metres from shore.
F
Fetovaia
Campo nell'Elba · West
Granite headland and crystal-clear water: the rocks at the sides of the bay offer rich seabeds to explore.
Elba's seabeds are among the most spectacular in the Mediterranean: gorgonian walls, shoals, caves and wrecks teeming with groupers, morays and schools of amberjacks. The protected waters of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park offer good visibility and great biodiversity.
The island's dive centres run try-dives, PADI and SSI courses for every level and guided trips to the finest sites, from easy dives suitable for beginners to deep walls for experienced divers.
The Elviscot wreck, a cargo ship that sank on 10 January 1972, lies among the Ogliera rocks off Pomonte at just 2-12 metres deep: it is one of Italy's most famous and accessible wrecks, perfect for snorkelling too.
Elba's jagged coastline is best explored by kayak or stand-up paddle: many coves and caves can only be reached from the sea, far from the crowds. Numerous centres offer rental and guided trips for every level.
In Portoferraio, Paddlelba offers tours on transparent-bottom kayaks and SUPs: departing from Le Ghiaie beach towards Cala dei Frati, Padulella and Capo Bianco, to admire the seabed from the surface.
From Elba you can sail to Pianosa, Capraia and the other islands of the archipelago. You can rent sailing boats and dinghies with or without a skipper, take sailing courses or join day trips, from beginners to experienced boaters.
Elba is a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to the steady mistral and sirocco winds. Wide beaches and sandy bottoms make many spots suitable for beginners too, with schools and equipment rental on site.
The best spots are the windy bays of Marina di Campo, Lacona and Procchio, with sheltered waters ideal for learning; on windy days conditions are excellent for experts too.
From May to October. The water is warmest between July and September (around 24-25°C), while June and September offer pleasant seas and less crowded beaches.
Do you need a licence to dive?
For a "try-dive" no: you go into shallow water with an instructor. For deeper dives you need a certification (PADI/SSI), which the island's dive centres issue through dedicated courses.
Can I snorkel at the Elviscot wreck?
Yes. The Pomonte wreck lies at just 2-12 metres and is visible from the surface with mask and fins, sea conditions permitting: it is one of the island's most loved sites.
Where can you windsurf or kitesurf on Elba?
The most suitable spots are Marina di Campo, Lacona and Procchio: wide, windy bays with schools and rental. Conditions depend on the mistral and sirocco winds.
Do you need a boating licence to rent a boat?
It depends on the boat: many dinghies and small boats can be rented without a licence, within power and distance-from-shore limits. Larger boats or charters require a licence or a skipper.
