Trail running and nordic walking on Elba Island
Continuous elevation, technical ground and trails that never stray far from the sea.
An off-season training ground
What makes Elba interesting for runners and pole walkers is not the mileage but the concentrated elevation: you start at sea level and pass a thousand metres within very few kilometres of distance. The trails are mostly natural, often technical, with sections of polished granite, stone steps and passages through low scrub. It is the kind of ground that trains the ankle and the ability to read a line.
The Grande Traversata Elbana is the backbone: some sixty kilometres of ridge that lend themselves both to long outings and to short repeated climbs. Nordic walking, which has a small active community on the island, finds ideal ground on cart tracks and steady-gradient paths where the poles genuinely work. The decisive advantage is climatic: here you run well precisely when it is too cold elsewhere.
Where to train, and when
The western side around Monte Capanne offers the longest, most sustained climbs; the central ridge is the natural ground for long runs; the coastal cart tracks near Portoferraio and Capoliveri give short, fast loops for recovery days. The good season runs from October to May, with winter perfectly usable: the thermometer rarely drops below zero and the trails stay dry. In summer you go out at dawn only.
