Mountain biking on Elba Island
Single track above the sea, mining tracks and climbs that top out at a thousand metres: a natural bike park.
Why Elba became a bike destination
Few Mediterranean islands pack this much vertical into so little space. From the coast you climb past a thousand metres, and the network of mining tracks, mule paths and single track lets you build rides of any difficulty without ever repeating a section. The surface changes constantly: compact granite on the western side, red earth and schist on the eastern one, sand and pine needles near the coast.
The Capoliveri and Monte Calamita side is the sector riders use most: long descents with the sea always in view, trails carved out of old quarry roads and a solid network of operators specialising in rental, bike hotels and guiding. On the opposite side, the Monte Perone and Monte Capanne area offers harder climbs and wider views. The e-bike has changed the rules: it opens up rides that used to demand a racer's legs.
The sectors where people actually ride
The useful season runs from March to November, with spring and autumn clearly the best: right temperatures, firm ground, empty roads. In July and August you ride early in the morning or at sunset. Many island operators run guided rides and shuttle services to gain height and ride only the descents: it is the format that most appeals to riders with few days who want to focus on the best sections.
