Horse riding on Elba Island
Rides through scrub and chestnut woods and, out of season, along empty beaches.
An island that suits a slower pace
Inland Elba is made of cart tracks, mule paths and forest roads linking the ridge villages through Mediterranean scrub and chestnut woods. That is exactly the terrain where a horse comes into its own: natural surface, steady gradients, no traffic. Riding lets you reach viewpoints and clearings that would take far longer on foot, and to do it quietly, which makes a real difference to the island's wildlife.
Riding centres on the island generally offer three formats: the one-hour ride for people who have never been on a horse, the half-day trek with a stop, and courses for those staying longer. Outside the bathing season, where municipal rules allow it, some stables run rides that reach the water's edge: cantering along a deserted beach is the reason many people book.
Where you ride on the island
The stables are mostly in the hilly interior and the farmed plains, a short distance from the main towns. The most comfortable window runs from September to June: in summer riding happens early in the morning or late in the afternoon so as not to tire the horses. Beach access is governed by municipal ordinances and changes from season to season: the centres themselves know where and when it is allowed.
