What Stagnone Beach is like
Stagnone lies on Capoliveri's east coast, at the foot of Monte Calamita, among the cliffs of the Costa dei Gabbiani. It consists of two tiny coves, around thirty metres in all, of sand and shingle with a few boulders. The name comes from the low rocks in front of the shore, which enclose a natural pool of calm, shallow water. To the north, the rocky coast continues as far as Capo Calvo.
Getting there
It is hard to reach. The dirt road to this stretch of coast crosses the private land of the Costa dei Gabbiani holiday village and is reserved for its guests: if you come from outside you have to leave the car at the barriers and walk about 2 km, a demanding route, or ask the property for permission. There is no parking. The easiest way is by sea: it is about 2.9 nautical miles from Porto Azzurro.
Which wind to go with
The coast faces east, so the best days are those with the libeccio (south-west wind), the westerly ponente and the mistral. With easterly winds, to which the coves are exposed, the sea comes straight onto the shore.
Facilities and tips
There are no facilities at all: bring water, food, shade and water shoes. In return it is rarely crowded and excellent for snorkelling, both in the bay and along the coast north towards Capo Calvo, where the rocks and seabed are also reported as very good for diving.
