What Istia Beach is like
Istia, also known as Istria, is a small beach on Capoliveri's east coast, south of Straccoligno, along the stretch known as the Costa dei Gabbiani. It sits in a bay between the Calanova point, with its pine wood, and the Liscoli rock, an islet about 200 metres offshore. It is made of fine gravel and sand, with some posidonia seagrass washed up in places, and faces east: in the afternoon, towards the end of summer, the bay falls into shade early.
Getting there
From Capoliveri, follow the signs for Straccoligno and then for Calanova beach; the last stretch is a dirt road. Leave the car at Calanova, where there is also a shaded car park, because a little further on a barrier closes the private area to vehicles. From there it is about 150 metres on foot to the beach; alternatively a short path starts from the right-hand side of Calanova beach.
Which wind to go with
Facing east, it is exposed to easterly winds; it is at its best with the libeccio (south-west wind), the westerly ponente and southerly winds, which blow off the land and leave it sheltered.
Facilities and tips
In season, rentals of umbrellas, sunbeds and small boats are reported; for a bar and restaurant, head to nearby Calanova. The varied seabed is full of fish and good for snorkelling, especially towards the Liscoli rock. The pine wood behind gives some natural shade. Bring water, water shoes for the gravel and a mask.
