What Buzzancone Beach is like
Buzzancone, also called Cera beach, is a small cove on the eastern coast of the Capoliveri promontory, along the Costa dei Gabbiani, in a small valley at the foot of Monte Calamita. About 50 metres long and some 20 wide, it is enclosed by two rocky headlands and made of sand mixed with fine gravel and small smooth pebbles. A short way out the seabed turns rocky and drops as a wall to about 30 metres.
Getting there
You cannot drive there. From Capoliveri follow the signs for Straccoligno and then the dirt road to Calanova, where there is a paid car park. Past the barrier marking the private property of the Costa dei Gabbiani holiday village, walk for about 15-20 minutes; the last stretch is steep and slippery, unsuitable for pushchairs or anyone with limited mobility. Alternatively, come by sea by kayak, SUP or small boat from Calanova.
Which wind to go with
The cove is exposed to easterly winds, especially the grecale (north-east wind). The sea is calm with libeccio (south-west wind), ponente (west wind) and mezzogiorno (south wind), which the headlands keep out.
Facilities and tips
There is no bar, toilet or rental: bring water, food and shade. It is one of the most interesting coves in the area for snorkelling and diving: among rocks and posidonia meadows a mask and fins are enough to see plenty of fish. Offshore lies the wreck of a Roman ship carrying amphorae, now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Portoferraio. The beach is rarely crowded.
