What Ginepro Beach is like
Ginepro beach lies on the eastern coast of Monte Calamita, in the wildest part of the Capoliveri promontory, between Cala delle Brache and Punta Bianca. It is a cove of about 35 metres dominated by large dark stones, with a small patch of gravel and sand where you can lie down. Much of the material comes from the waste of the nearby Ginevro mine, which operated from 1971 to 1981, was then one of the most modern in Europe, and reached 54 metres below sea level.
Getting there
It is hard to reach on land. The recommended way is by sea: by boat or canoe from Remaiolo beach, just under 2 km along the coast. There is also a demanding path across the private estate of the Tenuta delle Ripalte, which may only be used with permission from the estate staff. There is no dedicated parking for the beach.
Which wind to go with
Conditions are best with ponente (west wind) and mistral, which this side of the promontory is sheltered from.
Facilities and tips
There are no facilities: bring water, food, shade and water shoes. If you come by canoe, you can combine the visit with the other coves along this stretch, such as Cala delle Brache, Punta Bianca and Stagnone. To learn about the area's mining history, book a guided tour of the Ginevro mine, the only underground mine open to visitors on Elba: it starts from the Old Workshop Museum and goes down to 24 metres below sea level.
