Elba on foot
Hiking and nature route

About the Elba on foot itinerary

The Island of Elba is the fifth largest Italian island and has 375 km of marked trails in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Walking it means crossing Mediterranean scrub, granite ridges, views over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the medieval villages of the interior in a single day.

The itinerary ranges from the great classics (Monte Capanne, GTE, Volterraio) to easier routes for families. For the harder stretches we recommend local AIGAE guides.

Recommended duration 3-7 days
Best season March-June, September-November

The stops

The stops of Elba on foot

  1. Monte Capanne (1,019 m, cable car from Marciana)

The island's summit (1,019 m) can be reached by cable car from Marciana (about €18 return, running from Easter to late October) or on foot along the ridge trail. 360° views over the archipelago and, on clear days, as far as Corsica.

  2. Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE)

The GTE is the trail that crosses the whole island along the ridge: northern stretch (Cavo to Patresi, 55 km), southern stretch (Cavo to Pomonte, 47 km). It takes 3-4 days with nights in huts or bivouacs. For fit hikers.

  3. Volterraio Fortress (394 m)

A medieval fortress (Pisan, 12th century) perched on Monte Volterraio. A panoramic trail of medium difficulty, 1h30 from the road below. Spectacular views over Portoferraio and the north side of the island.

  4. Walking Festival (September)

Every September Elba hosts one of Italy's best-loved hiking festivals: themed guided walks, night outings, walks to Pianosa, meetings with nature guides. Programme on festivaldelcamminare.it.
