Napoleon's Elba
Imperial history route

About the Napoleon's Elba itinerary

From 4 May 1814 to 26 February 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte lived his first exile on the Island of Elba. Exactly three hundred days in which he ruled the island like a small kingdom, reorganised its administration and restored its villas and fortresses. The traces of that stay are the heart of a historic itinerary unique in the world.

All the main stops are in Portoferraio or a few kilometres from the centre, so this is a "compact" itinerary that can be done even in a weekend.

The stops

The stops of Napoleon's Elba

  1. Villa dei Mulini (Portoferraio)

The Emperor's town residence in the upper part of Portoferraio, between Forte Stella and Forte Falcone. Overlooking the sea, it keeps original furniture, Napoleon's personal library, the coat of arms with the three golden bees and the terraced garden.

  2. Villa San Martino (5 km from Portoferraio)

Napoleon's summer residence, set in greenery. Highlights are the Egyptian Room (frescoed in oriental style) and the Demidoff Gallery (a collection of Napoleonic memorabilia set up in the 19th century by the Russian prince who bought the villa).

  3. Forte Stella and Forte Falcone (Portoferraio)

The two 16th-century fortresses overlooking the harbour of Portoferraio were restored by Napoleon as a symbol of his power over the island. Panoramic visit over the historic town and the gulf. Forte Stella houses the lighthouse.

  4. Historic centre and Civic Museum of Portoferraio

A walk through the 16th-century historic centre founded by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1548. The Pinacoteca Foresiana Civic Museum keeps works and memorabilia from the Napoleonic period. Stop at the statue of Napoleon on the seafront.
