What Naregno Beach is like
Naregno lies on Elba's east coast, halfway between Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro, looking across the gulf towards the town. It is a beach of about 500 metres of fine pale sand with small shingle, some twenty metres wide and fringed by pines, holm oaks and palms. The seabed slopes very gently. The Spanish fortress of Forte Focardo stands on the headland closing the bay to the north-east, while opposite, above Porto Azzurro, you can see Forte Longone.
Getting there
You can drive from Capoliveri, about 3 km away, or from the main road linking Portoferraio with Porto Azzurro. There is a car park, but in high season the spaces near the sea go quickly. In summer the council shuttle bus links Naregno with Capoliveri throughout the day, and a small boat service runs to Porto Azzurro.
Which wind to go with
Facing north-east, it is sheltered from westerly winds: with the libeccio (south-west wind), the westerly ponente and southerly winds the sea is usually calm. The least suitable days are those with the grecale (north-east wind) and easterly winds in general, which blow into the gulf.
Facilities and tips
It is very well equipped: beach clubs with umbrellas and sunbeds, bars and restaurants along the promenade, shops, sailing, windsurfing and diving schools, pedal boat and canoe rentals, and mooring buoys. Facilities for people with disabilities are reported. A path through the Mediterranean scrub leads towards Forte Focardo. Shallow water and an often calm sea make it a good choice for families with children.
