What Ferrato Beach is like
Ferrato lies on the eastern coast of the Capoliveri promontory, along the Costa dei Gabbiani, just past Straccoligno towards Calanova. The beach, about 85 metres long, is split in two by a rocky spur: Ferrato Uno, with sand and small pebbles, and Ferrato Due, mostly pebbles. The sand has a reddish tint, and among the stones you can still spot bits of iron slag, known locally as rosticci, left by the ancient iron working that gave the place its name.
Getting there
From Capoliveri follow the signs for Straccoligno; past that beach, continue on the road towards Calanova. About 200 metres after the end of the tarmac, a signposted path only a few dozen metres long leads down to the beach, but parking along the road is limited. Alternatively there is a signposted paid car park in a pine wood, with a bar and toilets.
Which wind to go with
The beach faces north-east and is exposed to the grecale (north-east wind). With westerly winds such as ponente (west wind) and mistral the water stays calm and clear.
Facilities and tips
There are no beach clubs, showers or refreshment points on the beach: the only bar is at the pine-wood car park. In return it is quiet, and the seabed of sand, pebbles and rocks slopes gently and is excellent for snorkelling. Swimming along the rocks you can reach nearby coves, and Calanova, with full facilities, is less than half a kilometre away. Bring water, an umbrella and water shoes for the pebbly stretches.
