Staying in Portoferraio means being where most ferries from Piombino arrive, after a crossing of about an hour. Elba’s main town has a Medici-era historic centre, fortresses and the Villa dei Mulini, Napoleon’s residence in 1814-1815. Most hotels, however, are on the municipality’s bays: La Biodola and Scaglieri to the west, about 12 minutes’ drive away, San Giovanni and Magazzini on the far side of the bay, Ottone and Bagnaia further east. It is the most convenient base if you arrive late, leave early or want to tour the island by car.
