Among the many traditions that mark Easter on the Island of Elba, there is one I remember with particular affection, because it was discovered by my grandparents... on their first holidays on the island between the 60s and the 70s.
It is a beautiful bread, made in the ancient village of San Piero by hand, by the skilled hands of now very few ladies. It is called "Schiaccia Pasquale", but for many, like me, who came to know it as children it is the "bread with the little birds".
The dough of this hard bread has a unique fragrance, thanks to the addition of aniseed. Once baked, it keeps for a very long time... Every loaf is a one-off piece and is so beautiful that it is used as a table centrepiece...... eating it is almost a sin!!!
Ever since then, on holiday days, year after year this was the joyful Happy Easter wish waiting for us on the table together with mum, dad, grandparents and aunts and uncles... and it is the thought we want to share with all of you and your families!
Happy Easter from the Island of Elba and from the whole Elbamychef Staff !
