What Viticcio Beach is like
Viticcio is a small hamlet on the north coast of Portoferraio, overlooking the gulf that bears its name, opposite the Enfola headland. In front of the houses the shore breaks up into five small coves separated by rocks, about 200 metres in all, with fine gravel, grey pebbles and a few patches of sand. The seabed alternates rock and sand, and the water shifts from light blue to aquamarine, especially on sirocco days.
Getting there
From Portoferraio take the road to Enfola; after about 4 km, at the roundabout, keep left and continue for about 400 metres to the hamlet. The access road, damaged by landslides in 2025, was rebuilt by the municipality and reopened in June 2026. Near the coves there is a free car park with about twenty spaces, plus more higher up the road; an urban bus also serves the area. The paths down are short but partly stepped and uneven.
Which wind to go with
The coves are sheltered from westerly winds and are at their best with grecale, levante (east wind) and sirocco, when the water is calm and very clear.
Facilities and tips
The beaches are free, with no lidos: bars and restaurants belong to the hotels and trattorias of the hamlet, so bring your own umbrella for shade. The best moment is sunset, with the outline of Enfola in the background. A few hundred metres away are the little Pinetina cove and Enfola beach, where the trail around the headland starts.
