What Pinetina Beach is like
Pinetina is a tiny cove on the north coast of Portoferraio, in the Gulf of Viticcio, hidden among the rocks that separate Enfola beach from Viticcio. It is only 30-40 metres long and made of pale pebbles, from white to beige; the bottom of stones and rocks slopes gently, and the very clear water shifts from light blue to deep blue. The road leading to the path runs in the shade, first of pines and then of holm oaks.
Getting there
From Portoferraio take the road to Enfola; past the fork between Enfola and Viticcio, carry on towards Enfola for about 650 metres. On the left a path leads down to the beach: it is short but very steep and slippery, and on the last stretch there is a rope tied to the trees to help you. Parking is limited to a few lay-bys along the road, which fill up quickly in summer.
Which wind to go with
Good days are those with levante (east wind) and grecale; the mistral, to which the cove is exposed, makes the sea rough.
Facilities and tips
There are no facilities at all, so bring water, food and everything you need, ideally in a backpack to keep your hands free on the way down. Natural shade comes from the Mediterranean scrub and the rocks. The clear sea and the rocks on either side make it a good spot for snorkelling. Bars, restaurants and a lido are at Enfola beach, less than 300 metres away.
