What Procchio Beach is like
Procchio lies on the north coast of Elba, in the municipality of Marciana, halfway between Portoferraio (about 10 km) and Marciana (about 12 km). The beach draws a long arc of golden sand inside the bay of the same name, between Punta Agnone and the Guardiola, and at over 800 metres it is one of the longest on the island. The shallow seabed slopes very gently, ideal for children.
Getting there
From Portoferraio you arrive on the provincial road, and from the village roads continue to Marciana Marina and to the west coast. You can park in the unpaved car park at Campo all'Aia, paid in summer, or in the car parks behind the village; from the centre a short tree-lined pedestrian avenue takes you straight onto the sand. The village is served by regular buses and, in summer, by the Marebus shuttle.
Which wind to go with
The bay opens to the north: the sea is calm with the levante (east wind), the sirocco and the south wind, while with the tramontana (north wind) and the mistral the waves roll into the bay.
Facilities and tips
The beach alternates many beach clubs with free stretches, with showers, cabins, bars, restaurants, a children's playground and facilities accessible to disabled visitors. There are sailing, windsurfing and diving schools, and canoe, pedalo and boat hire. In Roman times the area processed iron and copper, and a furnace and the hull of a Roman ship with its cargo of amphorae were found here.
