What Pomonte Beach is like
Pomonte is a small village of Marciana on the south-western coast of Elba, at the foot of its own valley, below Monte San Bartolomeo. The beach in front of the village is pebbles and dark sand; the water is remarkably clear and stays shallow for quite a way out. About 200 metres offshore rises the Ogliera rock.
Getting there
Pomonte lies on the provincial road that runs along the island's west coast, between Seccheto and Chiessi. From the village square it is a walk of a few hundred metres down to the sea, and there is parking before the beach. From July to September the Marebus shuttle runs.
Which wind to go with
The beach faces west, and the sea is calm with the grecale (north-east wind) and the levante (east wind). It is exposed to westerly winds. In return, the sun sets over the sea towards Corsica.
Facilities and tips
The beach has a bar and hire of loungers, umbrellas and pedalos. Many people come for the Elviscot wreck, an Italian cargo ship of about 62 metres that ran onto the Ogliera rocks in bad weather on 10 January 1972. It lies on a sandy bottom at a maximum depth of about 12 metres and can be seen even with a mask and fins, reached by swimming, canoe or pedalo. The structure is fragile: for a closer look, go with a dive centre. On the rocks, a bigo, a rebuilt crane once used to load quarried granite, recalls the village's past.
