What Ogliera Beach is like
Just south of Pomonte's Spiaggia del Relitto, hidden from the road by a high rocky coastline, lies Ogliera beach: a stretch of fine pebbles and stones broken up in several places by tall rocks and granite boulders. Offshore rises the Ogliera rock, onto which a storm drove the cargo ship Elviscot on 10 January 1972; its wreck is now one of the most visited on the island. The water is exceptionally clear.
Getting there
Drive to Pomonte on the provincial road around the western side of the island and park near the Spiaggia del Relitto, across a small bridge from the square. From there you have two options: carry on along the shoreline, wading through the water in places, or take path 126A of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, which is very steep and difficult. Either way you need proper footwear.
Which wind to go with
Like the rest of the Pomonte coast, Ogliera faces south-west: the sea is calm with the grecale and levante, the north-easterly and easterly winds. With the libeccio (south-west wind) strong waves build up, and walking along the shore is not advisable.
Facilities and tips
There are no facilities on the beach: umbrellas, a bar and rentals are at the neighbouring Spiaggia del Relitto. This quieter stretch is a convenient starting point for snorkelling around the rock, close to the wreck, which lies at a depth of about 12 metres. Bring water, sun protection and reef shoes, and always swim with a diver's surface buoy.
