What Chiessi Beach is like
Chiessi is a hamlet of Marciana on the western side of Elba. Its beach is about 80 metres long and made of pale grey granite pebbles, framed on both sides by large, smooth granite rocks that make natural sunbathing platforms. The water is crystal clear and the rocky seabed is colourful and full of fish; on the horizon you can see Pianosa and Corsica, and in the evening the sun sets over the sea.
Getting there
Chiessi is on the provincial road that loops around the western part of the island, between Pomonte and Colle d'Orano. Drive there and park in the main square of the village, from where the beach is just a short walk away. The village is served by the regular bus and, in summer, by the Marciana municipal beach shuttle.
Which wind to go with
The sea is calmest with the grecale and levante, the north-easterly and easterly winds. In the afternoon a steady breeze often picks up, which attracts windsurfers.
Facilities and tips
Near the beach there is a bar, a newsagent and places to stay, as well as a slipway for launching boats. Snorkelling along the rocks at either end is very enjoyable, and by boat or canoe you can reach the nearby coves of Campo Lo Feno, Pietre Albe and Punta Nera. For walkers, the National Park's Valle di Chiessi loop starts from the village: about 10 km, four and a half hours, and rated demanding. Reef shoes help on the pebbles, and it is worth staying on until sunset.
