What Capo Bianco Beach is like
Capo Bianco lies on Elba's north coast, a few minutes from the centre of Portoferraio, at the foot of a pale cliff. Just under 300 metres long and about twenty metres wide, it is made of white pebbles of different sizes, with patches of grainy sand; the light-coloured bottom gives the water shades ranging from pale blue to deep blue.
Getting there
From Portoferraio's old town follow the signs for Le Ghiaie beach and then for Capo Bianco, for about one kilometre. Above the beach there is a large paid car park, from which a short flight of steps leads down to the shore. The beach is not big: to enjoy it at its best, choose it outside the peak season or arrive early in the morning.
Which wind to go with
This is the beach to pick with the sirocco and the south wind, when it is sheltered and the sea is calm and clear.
Facilities and tips
There is a beach establishment with umbrellas and sunbeds, pedal boat and canoe hire, a bar and restaurant and a small shop for beach items; there are also stretches of free beach, and the rocks at the sides offer more secluded spots. The right-hand side, with cliffs, caves and crevices, is the most interesting for snorkelling. A word of caution: in the flood of February 2025 a large mass of rock fell onto the beach, and it is always wiser not to settle at the foot of the cliff, where stones can come down.
