October on the Island of Elba is a season in its own right, not the tail end of summer. The sea is still swimmable, the trails are at their very best, prices drop noticeably. At the same time, part of the tourist offer shuts down: some hotels, most beach clubs, several seafront restaurants and a share of the rental companies. For those who arrive without checking, the risk is not bad weather: it is finding closed what they took for granted. This guide sets out what stays open and what needs verifying.
October weather, in numbers
The monthly climate averages for Elba are 19 °C highs and 14 °C lows, with a sea temperature of around 20.5 °C. Hours of sunshine drop to about five a day and rainy days rise to eight: statistically, October is the wettest month of the year on the island, with roughly 100 mm of rainfall.

Translated into practical decisions: swimming is possible but not every day, and a trip built on the beach alone is fragile. Those who plan October well travel with two parallel programmes — one for the sea, one for inland — and choose on the morning itself. Pack light layers, a rain jacket and hiking shoes alongside your swimsuit.
Ferries: the route never closes
The Piombino–Portoferraio crossing is served all year round by Moby, Toremar and Blu Navy. The trip takes about an hour on a conventional ship; the fast service takes around 40 minutes with a stop at Cavo. The operating window stays wide, roughly from 05:30 to 22:30, but the frequency changes: from about fifty daily sailings at the summer peak down to a minimum of around fifteen in the winter months.
What changes in practice
The reduction already starts in mid-September. There are three practical consequences. First: the useful departures cluster into a few time bands, so it is worth booking the outbound and return together. Second: the last evening sailing moves earlier, and anyone returning to the mainland the same day should build their margin around port traffic, not the timetable on paper. Third: a car space costs less in low season, but it is not unlimited on event weekends.
Getting around the island
The Autolinee Toscane bus network connects Portoferraio with the main towns all year round, but from mid-September the winter timetable comes into force, largely built around school journeys. The result is that on weekdays the service works well, while at weekends departures thin out and the more outlying hamlets become awkward to reach.
Car and scooter rental stays available, at lower rates than in August, but not every agency keeps full opening hours: availability should be confirmed, not assumed. Rule of thumb: if your stay is longer than three days and includes the western side — Pomonte, Chiessi, Sant'Andrea — a car is worth it; for a weekend based in Portoferraio you can manage without.
Where to stay: the seasonal accommodation issue
This is where the surprises concentrate. A substantial share of hotels, residences and campsites closes between the end of September and the first days of October. What stays open is mainly the accommodation in the towns — Portoferraio above all — and the properties that have chosen year-round opening as their business model.
The financial advantage is real and applies to both accommodation and the ferry. The constraint is choice: anyone looking for a specific type of property in a specific place has few alternatives, and they sell out quickly on event weekends. Filtering from the outset on year-round properties alone saves you sending enquiries that go unanswered.
Eating out: check, don't improvise
Restaurants follow the same curve. The seasonal places facing the beaches close first, often as early as the end of September; in the villages and main towns the offer remains, but with reduced hours and at least one closing day a week, typically between Sunday evening and Monday. In October, phoning on the day itself is not excessive caution: it is simply how it is done.
In return, this is the right month gastronomically. It is the season of grapes and the harvest, of new olive oil, of chestnuts from the upland villages and of mushrooms. Aleatico passito, the island's signature wine, tells its story far better in a cellar in October than on a beach in August.
What you actually do in October
Trails
This is the month's strongest argument. With highs around 19 °C, walking stops being an endurance test and the Elban trail network becomes walkable in full, from the ridge of Monte Capanne to the coastal paths of the western side. One caution only: usable daylight is shorter, and return times should be calculated against the actual sunset.
Sea
With the water still above 20 °C, snorkelling remains practicable, often with better visibility than at the height of summer. Bear in mind, though, that the beach clubs close: no sunloungers, no rental on site, free beaches and your own gear to carry.
Events
The month's most distinctive occasion is the Festa dell'Uva in Capoliveri, with its contest between the four districts, which reached its twenty-seventh edition in 2025. The dates of the next edition should be confirmed on the municipality's official channels before you commit to a ferry and a room, because the festival weekend is the one moment in October when the island genuinely fills up again.
The trip plan in five moves
1. Book the outbound and return ferry together, checking the time of the last evening sailing. 2. Choose your accommodation from the year-round properties, before deciding anything else. 3. Build two parallel programmes, sea and inland, to alternate according to the day's weather. 4. Confirm restaurants and rentals by phone: in October the hours published online are often still the summer ones. 5. Concentrate your travel on a few routes, so you don't spend the five hours of full daylight in the car.
October on Elba works well for those willing to plan a few extra checks. Those who do find the island with less traffic, walkable trails, reduced prices and a sea that is still usable. Those who don't risk finding the shutters down outside the restaurant they picked in August.
