On Elba, gelato is eaten on the move: along the seafront of Marina di Campo, by the Porta a Mare gate in Portoferraio, through the lanes of Capoliveri, around the harbour of Marciana Marina. Here are the gelato shops we have chosen: artisan workshops, seasonal fruit prepared by hand, flavours inspired by the island's desserts and herbs.
Some have several shops on the island, others are small village businesses. Two of them, Cremeria Gori in Capoliveri and La Svolta in Marciana Marina, are listed in the Gambero Rosso guide to Italian gelato shops.

Bars, cafés and cocktail bars for every hour of the day
A day on Elba starts at the counter: a cappuccino and a cornetto, or the pastries of a long-established bakery such as Panelba in Portoferraio. It ends with an aperitivo, often facing the sea: from the bar above the white beach of Capo Bianco to the cocktail bar at La Fenicia in Marciana Marina and the wine bar in the centre of Porto Azzurro.
With your aperitivo, ask for a glass of island wine: the Elba DOC appellation includes whites from Ansonica and Vermentino grapes, fresh and savoury, perfect with sharing boards, bruschetta and raw seafood.

How to choose well
A few pointers that apply across the island, especially useful on your first visit to Elba.
Spotting artisan gelato
Natural colours (real pistachio is dark green, almost brownish; banana is pale, not yellow), fruit flavours that change with the seasons, covered tubs or gelato kept level rather than piled high. If the list of ingredients is on display, that's a good sign.
Coeliac disease and intolerances
Several gelato shops on the island offer gluten-free flavours, dedicated cones or lactose-free options. Always ask at the counter: the risk of cross-contamination depends on how the gelato is served, not just on the recipe.
Sunset aperitivo
At seaside bars the best tables for the sunset fill up early, especially in July and August: arrive a little ahead or ask whether you can book.
Off-season opening hours
From June to September many places stay open until late; in spring and autumn hours are shorter and some close for the winter break. Check before you set off.

Bars and Gelato on Elba
On Elba, the bar is more than a quick stop: it's where days begin and evenings end. On an island you explore largely on foot, along seafronts, harbours and old towns, knowing where to stop for a proper coffee, an artisan gelato or an aperitivo with a view makes all the difference.

Morning
Breakfast at the counter or at a table: cappuccino, cornetti and fresh pastries. In the villages bars open early, before the beaches fill up.
Afternoon
Time for gelato and granita, on the seafront or in the square. Artisan gelato shops change their fruit flavours with the seasons: in summer peach, melon, strawberry, lemon.
Evening
An aperitivo with an island wine or a cocktail, often at sunset, then dinner. In the liveliest towns, such as Marina di Campo and Portoferraio, bars stay open late into the night in high season.
