Bars and Gelato

The bar on Elba, from breakfast to aperitivo

Cappuccino, espresso, orange juice, cornetti and almond cake on an outdoor table in a village square

The bar is the fixed point of the day on Elba. In the morning you have breakfast at the counter or at a table, with a cappuccino and a cornetto or fresh pastries from the island's bakeries; around midday many bars serve cold dishes and salads for people coming back from the beach. The afternoon is the time for an iced coffee, a granita or a gelato, before the seafront comes back to life.

The evening starts with an aperitivo. Along the coast there are cocktail bars and bars with tables by the sea, where the sunset is part of the ritual; in the old towns wine bars pour by the glass with sharing boards, bruschetta and raw seafood. Ask for an island wine: the Elba DOC appellation includes whites from Ansonica and Vermentino, fresh and savoury, which go very well with fish. In high season, in the liveliest towns, bars stay open late into the night.

At the counter or at a table? In many Italian bars a coffee drunk standing at the counter costs less than one served at a table: it's not a tourist trap, it's the usual custom.
