What Topinetti Beach is like
Topinetti lies on Elba's east coast, along the road between Rio Marina and Cavo, about 2.5 to 3 km from Rio Marina. What strikes you is the contrast between the black mineral sand, rich in iron and tiny flakes of haematite that sparkle in the sun, and the medium-sized white pebbles. The surrounding cliffs have vivid colours due to the iron minerals, and out to sea you can see Palmaiola and Cerboli.
Getting there
On the road from Rio Marina to Cavo, after about 2 km there is a sign: turn right onto a paved road that soon becomes a dirt track leading down to the sea. There is no official car park; you park along the track. Take care: in November 2024 and again in April 2026 Legambiente reported collapses and cracks in the rock face that runs from the provincial road down to the sea, with no stabilisation work done. Avoid sitting below the rock faces.
Which wind to go with
The beach is exposed to the levante (east wind) and is recommended with westerly winds and the mistral.
Facilities and tips
Near the parking area there is a small kiosk with a bar and lounger and umbrella rental, but otherwise the beach feels wild. The seabed is gravelly and slopes gently. The traces of past mining at the nearby Rio Albano mine are clearly visible, including the remains of an old loading pier. Ripa Bianca beach is less than 300 metres away. The Mining Park in Rio Marina runs excursions into the old mines.
