What Ottone Beach is like
Ottone lies on the eastern side of the Gulf of Portoferraio, along the road to Bagnaia. It is a beach of shingle mixed with sand, about 300 metres long, with a seabed that slopes gently and stays shallow for a long way, ideal for families with children. From the shore you can see the port of Portoferraio and the Medici fortresses on the other side of the gulf.
Getting there
From Portoferraio take the road to Bagnaia; after passing the entrance of a large hotel, about 200 metres further on a sign points to the beach, reached down a few steps. There is no proper car park: spaces are few and along the road. The area is served by bus.
Which wind to go with
Sheltered by the gulf and the hills, it is recommended with the east wind, the sirocco and the south wind. As it faces north-west, it is affected by winds from that direction, such as the mistral.
Facilities and tips
There is a beach establishment with umbrellas and sunbeds, a bar, a small jetty, pedal boat and small boat hire and a diving school, as well as stretches of free beach. Close to the beach you can see the remains of two old lime kilns. By pedal boat or small boat you can follow the coast to Magazzini, Schiopparello or Bagnaia, and the stretch towards Bagnaia is recommended for snorkelling. Nearby Ottonella, also reachable by a path through the holm oaks, is wilder and shadier but has no facilities.
