What Cavoli Beach is like
Cavoli is a small bay on the south-western coast of Elba, about 5 km from Marina di Campo, facing south and sheltered behind by the Monte Capanne massif. The beach is made of pale, coarse-grained sand that doesn't stick to your skin, with a stretch of granite rocks on the right-hand side. The water is clear, and on bright days you can see Montecristo and Pianosa on the horizon.
Getting there
From Marina di Campo follow provincial road 25 westwards and the signs for Cavoli; the stretch of road down to the beach is single-lane, with alternating traffic controlled by a traffic light. Cavoli can also be reached by bus. There are paid car parks opposite the beach and along via Cavoli, while a few free spaces can be found along the provincial road: in midsummer it pays to arrive early.
Which wind to go with
Its position shelters it from northerly winds: the sea is usually calm with the tramontana (north wind), the grecale (north-east wind), the east wind, the west wind and the mistral.
Facilities and tips
Cavoli is a very well-equipped beach: beach clubs with umbrellas and sunbeds, bars, restaurants, hot showers and shops, plus rental of pedal boats, canoes and SUPs. By pedal boat or canoe you can reach the Grotta Azzurra, a sea cave accessible only from the water. There is snorkelling among the rocks. Above the bay, along a footpath, stands the so-called Nave di Cavoli, a large Roman-era granite artefact linked to the ancient quarries of the area.
