Rental and Transport

Why on Elba a scooter beats a car

Elba's roads are narrow, winding and, in August, saturated. A car forces you to hunt for parking in the ridge villages and on the descents to the beaches, where spaces are few and often far away. A scooter or motorbike removes the problem at the root: you park anywhere, take the hairpins effortlessly and reach coves served only by minor roads. For a short stay it is almost always the most efficient choice, and the cheapest.

Local supply covers every need: 50 cc scooters for short hops and for AM licence holders, 125 cc for riding two-up comfortably, mid-capacity motorbikes for those who want to enjoy the panoramic roads. Many rental firms deliver directly to the port or to your accommodation, which removes the problem of getting to the pick-up point straight off the ferry.

It pays to leave the car on the mainland. Shipping a vehicle on the ferry costs a noticeable amount and in high season must be booked well ahead: crossing as a foot passenger and renting on the island is often both easier and cheaper.
Where and when

The roads worth riding

The western coast road, from Marciana Marina to Pomonte, is the finest stretch on the island: bends hanging over the sea, little traffic and continuous views. The climb to Monte Perone runs through chestnut woods to a pass overlooking both sides of the island. The Capoliveri and Monte Calamita loop alternates tarmac with mining landscape. In high season ride them early in the morning or after six in the evening, when traffic thins out.

Western coast road
From Marciana Marina to Pomonte: the island's most spectacular panoramic stretch, all bends above the sea.
Monte Perone pass
A climb through chestnut woods to the point that looks over both the gulf of Campo and the north coast.
Capoliveri loop
The mining side of Calamita: quieter roads, dark rock and views over the Piombino channel.
Helmet, a licence valid for the engine size and a deposit are the three things every rental firm asks for: having them ready saves time at pick-up.
Frequently asked questions

The questions we get most often

What licence do I need to rent a scooter on Elba?
For 50 cc an AM licence (or a category B licence) is enough. For 125 cc you need A1, or B with the conditions set out in Italian law. Larger engines require A2 or A. Every rental firm checks the licence at pick-up.
Should I bring my car or rent on the island?
For short stays it is almost always better to cross on foot and rent: you save the vehicle shipping cost and avoid the parking problem. For large families or long stays your own car remains more practical.
Can I rent out of season?
Yes, several firms stay open all year or on request. Out of season the choice is smaller but prices are lower and the roads are empty: for riders it is arguably the best time.
