Rental and Transport
A day on the water with no skipper and no licence
Renting a RIB or a small motorboat is, for many visitors, the best day of the holiday. The reason is geographical: many of Elba's finest coves have no access from land, and your own boat means choosing where to stop, how long to stay and when to head back, without depending on a group excursion's timetable. In calm conditions, touring the most spectacular stretches is within reach of anyone with a bit of common sense.
Italian law allows boats to be operated without a nautical licence below a set engine power and within the distance from shore laid down by law: these are exactly the craft island rental firms keep in their day-hire fleet. Above that threshold, or for longer trips, you need a licence or a skippered rental, which is also the most relaxing option if you have no experience.
Always check the limits in force. The maximum power allowed without a licence and the permitted distance from shore are set by national law and can change: the rental firm confirms them at handover, along with the limits written into your contract.
Where and when
Where to rent and how it works
Rental bases cluster in the main harbours: Portoferraio, Marciana Marina, Marina di Campo and Porto Azzurro, with smaller outlets in the southern resorts. The standard format is the full day, from nine in the morning to late afternoon, with fuel charged on consumption plus a deposit. The most useful advice is obvious but decisive: pick the base on the side sheltered from the day's forecast wind, not the one closest to your accommodation.
Portoferraio
The largest and best-equipped base: an easy start towards Enfola, Viticcio and the north coast.
Marina di Campo and the south
Ideal with northerly winds: direct access to the southern coves and the Golfo Stella.
Marciana Marina
The closest departure point to the western coast, the most beautiful and the least reachable by land.
Before setting off, always ask for the wind forecast and have the sheltered anchorages along your route pointed out: on Elba the afternoon breeze builds reliably and changes conditions completely.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we get most often
Do I need a licence to rent a RIB?
Not for craft within the maximum power allowed by Italian law and staying within the legal distance from shore. Above those limits you need a nautical licence or a skippered rental. Check the exact limits with the rental firm, as the rules can be updated.
Is fuel included in the price?
Almost never. The usual arrangement is handover with a full tank and payment on consumption at return, or a flat refuelling charge. It is the item that most differentiates two apparently similar quotes: always ask about it up front.
Can I reach Pianosa or Capraia with a rental boat?
Not with licence-free day-hire craft: the contracts impose distance limits from shore and the smaller islands have their own access rules. Those crossings require a suitable boat, a qualified skipper and the relevant authorisations.
