What Laconella Beach is like
Laconella is a small beach on Elba's south coast, in the gulf of Lacona, set between Punta della Contessa and Capo Fonza. It is about 210 metres long, with very fine pale sand and a few smooth pebbles, which gather mostly at one end, in the stretch known as Ghiaieto. The water is clear and aquamarine, and it stays shallow far out.
Getting there
From the road down to Lacona, follow the signs for the Laconella campsite; past the campsite entrance a narrow dirt road leads to the path to the beach, just over a hundred metres of uneven ground, with a steep final section between large boulders. There is practically no parking nearby and leaving the car along the road risks a fine: it is better to park in Lacona and continue on foot, or to come by scooter or by boat.
Which wind to go with
It is sheltered from northerly winds, so the best days are those with the tramontana (north wind), the grecale (north-east wind) and the mistral. It is exposed to southerly winds, which bring waves and, depending on the currents, piles of seaweed on the shore.
Facilities and tips
There are no beach clubs or bars, so bring your own umbrella, water and something to eat. The Punta della Contessa headland, on the left as you face the sea, with its V-shaped cliffs, is the best spot for snorkelling; the Ghiaieto is also popular with divers. With small children, bear the rough descent in mind.
