Why book a guide

Three good reasons not to walk alone

Elba's trails are well marked but there are many of them (375 km in the National Park network alone), and some require reading the terrain to stay safe. An AIGAE environmental hiking guide is not an extra cost: it is what turns a walk into a complete experience.

Safety first
Knowledge of the trails in every season, reading weather and sea on coastal paths and ridges, a first-aid kit and emergency procedures with the Tuscan Mountain Rescue, which can be alerted within minutes.
Reading the territory
Mining geology, Napoleonic history, endemic maquis flora, migratory birds: the guide ties the information to what you see step by step, so that at the end of the day the island stays with you.
Access to reserved areas
Pianosa can be visited only with guides authorised by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park; visits to Montecristo are rare and limited in number; some areas of Monte Calamita require specific permits. A guide opens doors that stay closed to the independent visitor.

Birdwatching

Outings in autumn and spring to the island's hot spots: Stagno di Mola and Schiopparello for waterbirds, Monte Calamita for birds of prey, Pianosa for migration. Binoculars provided by the guide.

Family hikes

Short themed routes designed for children aged 6 and up: mineral hunting, recognising animal tracks, tales of pirates and smugglers along the coves. Flexible timing, an easy start and frequent stops.

Four levels of difficulty

Guides rate every outing with a clear difficulty grade. Use this scale to speak the same language when you book.

Easy (T)
Up to 5 km, less than 150 m of ascent, even ground. Suitable for people who do not walk regularly and for children aged 6 and up.
Moderate (E)
5-10 km, 150-450 m of ascent, some stony stretches. You need good general fitness and proper hiking footwear.
Difficult (EE)
10-15 km, more than 500 m of ascent, exposure on windy ridges. Hiking experience and training required.
Expert (EEA)
Multi-day (GTE 47-55 km) with nights in a mountain hut or bivouac. Only for hikers already trained for consecutive stages.

Guides and co-operatives on the island

Everyone listed here is an Environmental Hiking Guide registered with AIGAE (Italian Association of Environmental Hiking Guides) or a cooperative recognised by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Contact them directly for programme, prices and availability.

We are selecting guide partners for this section. Are you an AIGAE-registered environmental guide or an active co-operative on Elba? Write to us to activate your listing on ElbaMyLove.
How to choose: always ask for the AIGAE registration number and professional liability insurance. Typical rates on Elba are around €25-35 per person for a half-day group outing, and more for private or multi-day trips. For Pianosa the price includes the ferry and the Park ticket.
Where you need a permit

Pianosa and the reserved areas

The Tuscan Archipelago has strictly protected areas and zones that can only be visited with authorised staff. They are among the most sought-after experiences of a holiday on Elba, but they must be booked well in advance.

Authorised guide only
Pianosa
A penal colony until 1998, today the Park's most protected area. Daily ferry from Marina di Campo (April-October season) and from Piombino. Visits on foot or by e-bike with Park guides along the only open routes: bastions, oratory, Punta Libeccio lighthouse. The daily number of visitors is limited.
Restricted-access areas
Calamita, Montecristo, smaller islets
Monte Calamita: mining tunnels open only on Mining Park tours. Montecristo: strict nature reserve, very rare access (about 1,000 visits a year), on a waiting list. Scoglietto and Cerboli: Natura 2000 sites, landing forbidden, approached by sea only.
Pianosa: book well in advance. In high season places sell out weeks ahead. The Park guides work through the Parco Arcipelago Toscano cooperative and the few authorised operators: beware of unrecognised do-it-yourself excursions.

Seasons for excursions on Elba

🌸
Spring
IDEAL
March to May is the perfect season: the maquis in bloom (rockrose, broom, wild orchids), temperatures of 18-24°C, calm sea for the return. All outing types are available, including the reopening of Pianosa in April.
☀️
Summer
DAWN/EVENING ONLY
June to August: hiking only at dawn (5:30-9:00) or sunset, never in the middle of the day because of the heat. Plenty of night hikes and stargazing walks. At least 2 litres of water per person.
🍂
Autumn
SPECTACULAR
September to November: warm colours in the maquis, the grape harvest in the vineyards, bird migration (birdwatching at its best). In September the Festival del Camminare walking festival offers free or low-cost guided hikes.
❄️
Winter
OFF SEASON
December to February: crystal-clear light, Volterraio and the ridges covered in snow in colder years, the island all to yourself. Fewer guides at work: book ahead. Pianosa closed.

What to bring on an excursion

Essential list for half-day outings. For multi-day trips the guide will send you a dedicated checklist. Poles, GPS and emergency kit are normally provided by the guide.

🥾
Hiking boots
Lugged sole, high ankle above the easy level. Never trainers on E/EE trails.
💧
At least 1.5-2 L of water
There are no fountains along the trails. Fill your bottle before setting off, ideally two 1-litre bottles.
🧢
Small 20-30 L backpack
Big enough for water, a packed lunch, a light change of clothes, a windbreaker and snacks. No shoulder bags.
👑
Hat and sunscreen
Strong sun from May to September. Wide-brimmed hat, SPF 30+ sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection.
📱
Charged phone
There is signal on most trails. The guide uses dedicated GPS apps; you keep yours for photos and emergencies.
🩹
Light layers
Technical top plus fleece or a thin windbreaker. On the ridges, even in summer, the wind lowers the perceived temperature by 5-7°C.
Frequently asked questions

FAQ about guided excursions

How much does a guided hike on Elba cost?
Reference rates for a half-day group outing (max 12-15 people) are around €25-35 per person; a full day costs €45-60. Private outings (1-4 people) cost €150-200 per group. Pianosa includes the ferry and the Park ticket and starts at about €60-70 per person.
Do I need to book in advance?
For regular outings 2-3 days' notice is enough out of season, one week in July-August. For Pianosa book as soon as you have your dates: places sell out weeks ahead in high season, and the Park limits the daily number of visitors.
Which languages do the guides speak?
Italian always, English in most cases. German and French are common especially in Capoliveri and Marciana Marina, but check with the individual guide when you get in touch. Some cooperatives organise themed outings in other languages on request for groups.
Are the hikes suitable for children?
Yes, but the recommended age is 6 and up for Easy (T) outings. Under 6, short nature walks (1-2 hours) or beaches reached by flat paths such as Capo d'Enfola are a better choice. Guides offer themed routes designed for families.
What happens if it rains?
In light rain the hike goes ahead (Elba has a Mediterranean climate and showers are short). In heavy rain or wind above 50 km/h the guide reschedules for the next day or refunds the fee. For Pianosa the ferry captain decides: in rough seas the trip is postponed.
What does “AIGAE guide” mean?
AIGAE (Italian Association of Environmental Hiking Guides) is the national register recognised by Law 4/2013. An AIGAE guide has passed the regional exam, holds liability insurance and trains continuously. It is the main sign of reliability when you choose who to walk with: always ask for the membership number.
