The evening ritual
Sunset spots: the Tyrrhenian on fire
Sunset on Elba is a spectacle no photo truly captures: the sun dropping towards Corsica, the sea turning orange then violet. Different every evening. Here are some of the best places to enjoy it.
Sant'Andrea
Marciana • north-west side
The pink granite cliff in front of the hamlet is one of the island's most beautiful spots: crystal-clear water in the foreground, glowing rock and the sun vanishing towards Corsica.
Outstanding photo spot
Capo d'Enfola
Portoferraio • north-west headland
The classic. The headland faces directly west, with no obstacles. The low light of the last hour turns the rocks bright orange. Bring a blanket.
Arrive 30-60 min early
Monte Capanne
Marciana • 1019 m a.s.l.
The most spectacular sunset: from the archipelago's highest peak you watch the sun drop beyond Corsica with the whole archipelago in a 360° view. Mind the last cable car.

Marciana Marina
Marciana Marina • pier
From the pier the view reaches the islands and Corsica. The fishing boats returning at sunset are the perfect frame, with an aperitif on the harbour right after.
Aperitif on the harbour after
Capoliveri
Capoliveri • Piazza Matteotti
From the medieval village the view opens onto the double gulf of Stella and Lacona. In summer the aperitif in the square, often with live music, is a slice of authentic Elban life.
Often live music in summer
Forte Stella
Portoferraio • Medici fortress
From Portoferraio's Medici walls the view sweeps over the harbour lit by the sunset. Combine it with Napoleon's nearby Villa dei Mulini.
Near the Villa dei Mulini
When: in summer (July-August) the sun sets around 8:30-8:45 pm with often clear skies; in September-October low clouds on the horizon bring the most intense colours. Always arrive 30-60 minutes early.
The golden moment of the day
Aperitif: the Elban dolce vita
The aperitif on Elba is an essential social ritual. Every village has its historic bars, every harbour its tables on the water. A glass at sunset overlooking the Tyrrhenian: hard to beat.
