Elba Isola Musicale d'Europa is a classical music festival that, from late August to mid-September, brings concerts to theatres, fortresses, churches and squares all over the island, with Italian and international musicians.
A festival born in the 1990s
The festival celebrated its thirtieth edition in 2026. The repertoire ranges from baroque and chamber music to contemporary music and jazz, with orchestras, ensembles and established soloists, and room for young talent too.
Where to hear it
The main venue is the Teatro dei Vigilanti "Renato Cioni" in Portoferraio: created from the 18th-century church of the Carmine, it was turned into a theatre during Napoleon's exile on Elba and opened in 1815; today it bears the name of the Elban tenor Renato Cioni. The other concerts move around the island's municipalities, to places such as the Pisan Fortress in Marciana or the sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato.
Tips for visitors
- The programme and tickets are online before the festival begins: it is worth booking early.
- Concerts move from one municipality to another: always check the venue and time of each performance.
- Late August and September are a good time for the island: the sea is still warm and it is less crowded than in high summer.
