Every May the Elba Island Marathon brings runners from many countries to Marina di Campo. The course follows the Costa del Sole, the island's south-western coast, past fishing villages, beaches and granite cliffs.
The races
- Marathon (42.195 km): start on the Marina di Campo seafront; the course passes through the villages of Sant'Ilario and San Piero and runs along the Costa del Sole to the turning point at Chiessi, finishing in Marina di Campo.
- Half marathon: turning point in the bay of Fetovaia, finish in Marina di Campo.
- 10 km: a competitive race on the streets of Marina di Campo, as far as the start of the Costa del Sole.
- Non-competitive: the Family Run of about 6 km, open to everyone, and other untimed walks.
Three days of running
The marathon fills a whole weekend: on Friday the marathon village opens, with bib collection and stands; Saturday is dedicated to the Kids Run for children and teenagers; the races start on Sunday morning. The event is organised by the Elba Runners sports club, which launched it in 2016.
Tips for runners (and supporters)
- Registration, rules and up-to-date times are on the marathon's official website: check them before you travel.
- On Sunday morning some roads on the course are closed to traffic during the race: if you are not running, plan your journeys accordingly.
- Start and finish are in Marina di Campo: staying in the village or nearby saves travelling on race morning.
