The Rallye Elba has been run on the island since 1968. Every spring, for two days, the roads between the sea and the hills of the interior become timed special stages: hairpin bends and climbs with views over the sea.
More than fifty years of history
The first edition started from Portoferraio on 16 February 1968. By 1973 the race already counted towards the European Championship, and throughout the 1970s it brought drivers from all over Europe to Elba. Back then the stages ran on gravel mountain roads, with names that rally fans still remember: Volterraio, Monte Perone and Due Mari.
How it works today
The race lasts two days, with a series of special stages between sea and mountains, some of them run more than once. The logistical hub is usually Portoferraio, home to the service park and the finish. The Rallye Elba is organised by the Automobile Club Livorno; the programme, the stages and the championships it counts towards change from year to year.
Tips for spectators
- During the special stages the roads involved are closed to traffic: check times and routes before driving around the island.
- Watch the stages only from the spectator areas indicated by the organisers, and never on the outside of a bend.
- Crews, teams and fans come to the island for the rally: if you want to stay close to the stages, book early.
Not to be confused with the Rallye Elba Storico, the historic car rally held at the end of September.
