The island of Elba from the cyclo-excursionist and geographic point of view is extremely varied.
If in the west part there are differences in height and the major slopes with a typically mountain vegetation, in the East we can notice a typical Mediterranean vegetation spread on slopes much sweeter. All this is due to the difference in geological age, which in the first case is more recent while in the second much older (about 7 million years against 500 mln) and, to the different composition of minerals. In fact, while in the west it dominates the granite, in the East we find the iron with its ancient mines. A third type of environment, more properly sedimentary / calcareous and mainly conditioned by the climate, is the central part of the island; included in the Portoferraio - Lacona scissors. Typical of this territory is the trail network of the undergrowth, including holm-oaks, strawberry trees, stipe and oaks. Often there are reforestations of pine forests of an artificial nature.
Path
The planned route is set on an extremely smooth terrain, with few obstacles in succession (however not to be underestimated), compact bottom and protected from vegetation.
The departure is scheduled from Lacona, near Via del Moletto.
It starts on asphalt for about 2 km, then begins a climb of about 3 km that leads to the firebreak of Monte Orello with panoramic views over the Gulf of Lacona to about 300 meters above sea level.
From this point you remain at altitude and continue on stretches of dirt road that coincides with the Grand Traversata Elbana, which is the ridge path that divides Elba from East to West.
After about 12 km from the start up to the insertion of the path 245 in Loc. Monte di San Martino an exciting descent begins in the shaded undergrowth of the North side up to the beach of Procchio, in Loc. La Guardiola where the first break is expected .
From here continue on asphalt towards Portoferraio up to the Biodola junction, where trail 248 begins, which initially coincides with a stretch of dirt road and ends with trail 252 (single trail undergrowth). Arrival in the historic district of Carpani.
From here the ride takes a decidedly urban turn approaching the pier and passing through the ancient Medicean walls in the oldest part of the city.
There will be a small rest stop waiting for the luggage that will be taken care of by the host structure directly on the pier where boarding will take place to those who will request it.
