Vets for your animals on Elba
On Elba Island several private vets operate in the main areas, complemented by the Public Veterinary Service of USL Toscana Nord-Ovest covering public veterinary health, dog registry, microchip and mandatory vaccinations. This page gathers practical info for those travelling with animals, living on the island or needing veterinary care.
Clinics and surgeries by area
Seven private vets work on the island: five around Portoferraio and the north coast, one in Marina di Campo and one in Rio Marina. They are surgeries for check-ups, vaccinations and preventive care; for specialist tests or hospitalisation you may need to go to the mainland.

Vet on-call line, every day
A vet is not on duty every night: on the other nights the free number gives you advice over the phone, and serious cases may need the first ferry to Piombino.
Information only, checked in September 2026. Hours and availability change: call before you go.
Public veterinary service (ASL)
The USL Toscana Nord-Ovest Veterinary Service handles public veterinary health: dog registry, mandatory microchip, legal vaccinations, health checks, international travel. Reference HQ is Portoferraio Civil Hospital.
What ASL Veterinary does
- Dog registry - dog registration to national registry
- Microchip - identification microchip implant (mandatory by law)
- Rabies prevention - legally mandatory and public health vaccinations
- EU pet passport - European pet passport issuance
Microchip and vaccinations
In Italy identification microchip is mandatory by law for all dogs. For cats it is not mandatory but strongly recommended (also for travel). Basic vaccinations are recommended both by law and for public health.
Microchip
- Mandatory for all dogs in Italy, inserted in first 60 days of life or within 15 days from purchase/adoption
- Implanted under neck skin, painless. Unique 15-digit code on the National Dog Registry
- Owner change, decease, address change: registry update within 15 days
Vaccinations
- Dogs: distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, leptospirosis, rabies (mandatory for international travel)
- Cats: trivalent (panleukopenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis), feline leukaemia (FeLV), rabies for travel
- Annual boosters generally, health booklet always updated
Lost or found animals
If you lose your animal or find one, follow these steps to increase chances of return or adoption. The island has a very active animal volunteer network.
