Island Animal Friendly

On the beach...

Regional law n.59/2009 Art.19: all dogs have access to beaches provided they are kept on a leash, do not disturb and are under strict control of the owners.
Dogs must be microchip registered, vaccinated and treated against parasites. Swimming is allowed only in the morning before 8 am and after 20 pm.
Exceptions: dogbeach Loc. Mola (Porto Azzurro) and Nisporto (Rio Elba) where you find a specific area for dogs. Finally, for their physiological needs, you must take them away from the beach, and always use the pet cleaning kit.

Walking...

The paths of the Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, can be walked with the dog on a leash only, in order to avoid wildlife perturbation and prevent dangerous encounters (vipers and poisonous insects).
Cleanliness and tidiness are a must in all public places, streets and sidewalks.
This is why you should always have your cleaning kit, anytime your dog is with you.
It is required by law and good manners. A gesture of respect for those who come on holiday and for those living on the island.

At the Restaurant...

Keep your dog on a leash near you. It should not hinder the waiters and other customers in the restaurant.
Remember that your pet should be well behaved: his good education depends on yours.
The rule, even for the dog, is to be clean and tidy.
If there are other dogs in the restaurant, avoid the barking. Ask the waiter to choose a quieter table to stay. To keep your dog busy during lunch or dinner bring a toy or a bone and let it out for a short walk, if necessary.
This will help your dog to relax.

If your pet is a cat…

Protect its travel in a cage covered with a soft cloth. For your and its tranquility. Upon arrival, put the cage in a cool and quiet spot, open the cage’s door and close room’s door. Ensure there is always some food, water and cat litter available.
Your cat will need time to explore the new environment.
It is recommended not to let the cat go outside until he gets used to the new environment. It 'still a choice to be evaluated carefully, and not risk free. If you decide to get it out, leave it on an empty stomach. The cat will come back home just at the sound of dry food in the bowl.

Think about the health of your pet...

The Island of Elba is, unfortunately, endemic area of Leishmaniasis. It is among Italian areas with higher risk of infection. As is known, leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease is transmitted by the bite of some types of insects. It's important to take all necessary precautions in this case:

  • A sufficient coverage against parasites, with specific products
  • Apply on the fur repellents like neem oil
  • Avoid long evening and night walks
  • Keep your dog indoors during the night, covering the windows with mosquito nets.
